As we sat and waited for our pizza’s, we talked about our day and what it would be like once they came back to Dallas.
“So, will I be going to school in the city,” Devyn asked.
“No. There’s a private school in our area that you will be attending. There will be boys and girls your age and as cute as you are, I know you won’t have trouble making friends fast,” I told her.
She frowned, then questioned, “Wait, will I have to wear a uniform?”
“No, you can wear what you want.”
Hailey took a sip from her water, then quizzed, “So, what do you expect me to do, be the dutiful stay at home wife? That’s not going to work for me. As I’m sure you already know from your background check, I have a degree in Child Psychology and was starting to build up my clientele before all of this happened. I’d like to pick up my practice again, that is if my patients haven’t dropped me since I’ve been MIA on them.”
I removed my arm from around her shoulders, taking her hand in mine. “Yes, I know that you’re a Psychologist and no, I do not expect you to be a stay at home wife. You worked for your degree and I would never take that away from you. If you want to continue your practice, then do so. I have an office in the house that you can make your own or you can turn one of the guest rooms into your office. Plus, with this COVID shit going on, you can do your appointments virtually. After you figure out which room you want to use for your office, I’ll have Tech come and set everything up for you.”
Hailey stared at me for a few moments before a smile spread across her face and she squeezed my hand. “Thank you”
“No need to thank me, Η καρδι? μου,” I responded.
She raised her eyebrow, and asked, “What does that mean?”
“My heart,” I honestly replied, because Hailey did have my heart. I would do anything to keep her happy.
“Oh,” she whispered just as Fiona appeared with a tray holding our pizzas.
“Oh, wow! Alistair, will you teach me some words in Greek” Devyn wanted to know.
“I sure will, but first, let’s enjoy our meal.”
After Fiona placed the pizzas on our table, I used the spatula to put a slice from Devyn’s pizza on her plate and used it to serve Hailey a slice from ours. The cheese from both was hot, gooey, and stringed along. I had to use the side of the spatula to cut it. The slices are so thick, there’s no way we would be able to pick them up like you would do a traditional piece of pizza. This was Chicago deep dish at its finest. They grabbed their knives and forks. Once I had a slice on my plate, we dug in. Hailey and Devyn both closed their eyes and hummed their praises.
“Oh my God, this is so good,” Hailey said with a mouth full.
“I could stay here just for the pizza,” Devyn added.
I picked up my napkin to wipe my mouth. “Well, lucky for the two of you, if we can’t make it back, we can always order frozen ones to be shipped to us in Dallas.”
“Are you serious,” Hailey murmured as she cut into another piece.
“Yes”
“Well, before we leave, you need to order about five or six of these, so they will be there when we get back.”
I laughed. “Will do.”
As we sat enjoying our meal, Hailey tried to dissect the pizza, trying to figure out the herb and spices they used. Fiona came back around, bringing refills for our drinks and asking how we were doing. I was into my third slice when my cell phone began to ring. After wiping my mouth and hands, I pulled it out to see who it was. Tech.
“I need to take this call, I’ll be right back,” I tell Hailey and Devyn. Devyn smiles, but Hailey gives me a questioning look. I lean over and kiss her cheek, then whisper in her ear, “It’s Tech.” She nods as I slide out the booth and go towards the front entrance, passing a bunch of frat boys. One bumps into my shoulder.
“Excuse you,” the asshole has the nerve to bark.
I smirk, “No, the excuse was your mother not swallowing you.” His friends laugh at his expense as he widens his eyes. I’m having a good day motherfucker, don’t be the reason it turns sour with your bullshit, I think to myself as I give him a death stare. His friends pull him away as I hit the answer button on my phone. Pussy.
“What’s up, Tech,” I greet, stepping outside.
“Hey, Alistair. Just wanted to let you know Andre has checked himself out of the hospital and is on his way back to Atlanta. I guess your point was well taken,” he replies with a laugh.
I smile. “Good! That motherfucker doesn’t want this smoke and I have plenty of it. Let me know when his ass touches down in Atlanta. I want to be certain he’s back there and far away from Hailey and Devyn.”
“No problem. I’ll be in touch,” he says before we end the call.
