Chris looked scared as he pleaded, “Paris, wait! Tell them I just wanted to take you out to eat, that’s all. I wasn’t trying to hurt you!”
I ignored him as Mr. Kourakos led me back to the door then opened it. “The driver will be waiting for you when you’re ready.” I shook my head as I reentered the club.
After getting myself together, I went to the front of the club. Just as Mr. Kourakos said, a car was waiting for me. I gave the driver my address, then got inside. I laid my head against the headrest and began to rub my temples as a headache was starting to form. I just wanted to go home, wash Chris’ grimy prints off of me, then climb into my bed; think about whether or not I wanted to continue dancing. I was not down for shit like that happening, especially at an upscale club like The Elite...
The next morning, I woke up to my phone ringing. Snatching it from the nightstand, I looked at the unrecognizable number, groaned, then laid it back down. Seconds later, it rang again. Picking it up again, it was the same number. Hitting the answer button, ready to go off on whoever was on the other line, I snapped my mouth shut when I heard Mr. Kourakos’ voice on the other end.
“Good morning, Nina. I hope I didn’t wake you.”
“No, no you didn’t,” I lied, sitting up in the bed, then reaching for the glass of water on the nightstand to wet my dry throat.
Mr. Kourakos laughed into the phone. “You should never lie to your boss, Nina.”
I swallowed the water down hard, rolling my eyes from being busted. “Sorry about that.”
“No, problem. I just wanted to check on you this morning.”
I sat the glass back in its place and said, “I’m okay, still a little shocked that Chris would do something like that.”
“I’m sure you are. Some men build fantasy relationships in their heads over the dancers. They get so wrapped up in it, that it causes them to not be able to distinguish fantasy from reality, but I wanted to let you know, you won’t be having any problems out of him anymore. As an added precaution, security will be posted in the parking lots when you ladies leave for the night.”
“Wow, thank you. I’m curious though, how did you three know what was going on,” I asked.
“I have camera’s in the parking lots. I saw it on the feed in my office. Luckily, we were able to get there before he dragged you off. This situation has made me aware that the cameras were not enough. I would hate if something like that happened again, which is why I’ve added security.”
Well, that was a good thing. There’s no telling how many other girls have been approached when leaving at night.
Mr. Kourakos broke my train of thought when he said, “I know last night was crazy and I would totally understand if you decided to quit, but I want to assure you nothing like that will happen again. You’re one of my best dancers, Nina, and I would hate to lose you. Take this week to think it over and if you decide to stay, I’ll see you Friday night, okay?”
I nodded my head up and down as if he could see me through the phone before I answered, “Okay”
“Good, now go back to your beauty rest,” he stated before the line went dead.
I did as he said and used my time off to mull over whether or not I wanted to stay on as a dance at Elite. By the time Friday night rolled around, I was walking through the doors of the club. I still had less than two years left of school. I needed to continue to make my money to pay for that and save. With Mr. Kourakos adding security to the parking lot, I didn’t have to worry about the same shit happening again. I never saw Chris again, I guess Mr. Kourakos banned him from the club after their little talk.
After the incident, every Saturday night before I left to go home, Mr. Kourakos would wave me over from the main floor and ask how was I doing. I thought that was very considerate of him.
Often, I would catch myself watching his every move when he would make his way through the club, greeting customers or having drinks at the bar with Alistair and Xander. I finally came to realize I had a major crush on Mr. Kourakos and that was a secret I was taking to the grave.
By the time I graduated college with my degree, I had moved out of the dorms and into my own apartment with enough money in the bank to start living my dream. The day of my graduation, a courier knocked on my door holding a thick package. After signing for it, I examined it while closing the door with my foot. There was no return address or name on it other than mine, which I found odd. Turning over the package, there was a small enveloped taped to the other side. I ripped it open and pulled out a written note that said ‘Congratulations on the next chapter in your life. This should help you get started, Balthazar Kourakos. I stared at his neat penmanship, stunned that he would send me a gift. I wondered how did he know I was graduating that day but then I got the shock of my life when I removed the taped from the package; inside of it was ten thousand dollars. There was two individually wrapped stacks with five thousand dollars printed on the bands. My mouth hit the floor. Why would he send me money like this?!
Although it was a generous gesture, I couldn’t keep the money. Remembering I still had his number in my phone from when he called to check on me, I grabbed it and called him.
“Hello,” Mr. Kourakos’ sexy voice answered.
“Hey, Mr. Kourakos, this is Nina.”
“Yes, I know. How are you, Nina?”
He was always so polite.
“I’m fine. I wanted to call and thank you for your gift but I can’t accept it. It wouldn’t be right for me to take monetary gifts from my boss.”
If I hadn’t heard him breathing on the other line, I would’ve thought he hung up on me because he was quiet for a few seconds.
“I gave you the gift because I know how hard you’ve worked to graduate. You did it on your own; that speaks volumes. So, you will keep the money, that’s that. Use it to do something nice for yourself, you deserve it. Now, is there anything else,” Mr. Kourakos questioned, killing any notion of me returning the money.
The man left me speechless. Who gives their employee shit like that? Was he trying to buy me?
