“But did you have to kill him?”
Zar holds me tighter, growling in my ear, “Hell, yes! He touched what was mine and for that he deserved to die!”
“Yours? I was never yours!”
Zar gives me chilling glare as he says in a deep tone, “You were mine the day you auditioned at my club, you just didn’t know it. Yes, we’ve done our own thing since you left, but that one fact has never changed. I was coming for you Nina, which is why I had Selena’s party set up at your club. I thought I could come in, give you my dazzling smile, you’d welcome me with open arms, and we’d live happily ever after. Boy, did I not see this in the plan.”
“I am not yours Balthazar, you don’t even know me,” I try to convince.
Zar nuzzles my neck, whispering against my skin, “I know you, Nina. I know you like to go to the park on Sunday afternoons and sit under the same tree, reading a book. I know your favorite take out is Jamaican jerk chicken with fried plantains. I know you will drive through you old neighborhood, just to remember how far you have come. I also know the reason you won’t commit to a relationship is because you were always waiting on me. You can try to deny it all you want, but we both know I’m right. I know this has been a lot for you hear, especially with everything that has happened tonight. Why don’t you go lay down? You must be exhausted. Get some rest and we’ll continue this conversation in the morning.”
“Are you leaving?” I question, with a crazy part of me hoping he will stay. It has to be the liquor.
“Hell, no. I’m staying here just in case yourfrienddecides to show up again. I’ll be right here on the couch,” Zar affirms, letting his arms go slack around me.
Standing, I survey his handsome face. Three years later, and Zar is still as handsome as ever. Who would have thought the sexy Greek my body craved for lived a double life and now the shit has landed at my doorsteps...literally?
“Go set the alarm on the house, then get some rest, Nina. I’ll be right here if you need me,” he says, taking my hand in his, then bringing it to his lips. I close my eyes as the softness of them touches the back of my hand. A warm, tingling feeling spreads through my body, causing me to shudder. “Good night,” Zar states, giving my hand a slight squeeze before releasing it.
Giving Zar a quick nod, I leave him in the living room. I desperately needed a hot shower to help clear my head. Maybe it will help me fall asleep, but I doubt I’ll be meeting the sandman tonight with Zar sleeping under my roof.
Chapter 6
Balthazar
As soon as I hear Nina close the door to her bedroom, I remove my cellphone from my suit jacket, and call Alistair. I don’t know for sure if Trent would try to do something stupid but just in case I wanted us to be ready.
“What,” Alistair answers on the third ring, sounding out of breath. No need to ask what he’s up to.
“I need you undivided attention right now, Alistair,” I state in a tone that let him know this I meant business.
“Hold on,” he responds before rustling sounds are heard.
“Alistair, where are you going,” a female whines in the background.
“Just stay in that fucking position, I’ll be right back,” Alistair tells her. Seconds later, I hear a door close. “What’s up, Zar?”
“We might have a problem on our hands,” I sigh.
“What kind of a problem?”
“Do you remember that Italian family we were fighting with after I took over,” I ask, jogging his memory.
“Yeah, we kicked their asses and they sat down like the little obedient dogs they are. What about them?”
“Well, it appears Nina had something going on with old man Ganino’s grandson. He was at her house earlier when I followed her home. I pulled my gun on him, and Nina made him leave. I don’t think he remembers who I am, but it won’t take long for him to find out and when he does, we may have another war on our hands. I want everyone on alert. He’s a cocky little fucker, so there’s no telling what he might do.”
“Why didn’t you kill his ass when you had the chance, then call the cleanup crew to get rid of the body? Then there wouldn’t be any threat of a war. His family would’ve assumed he went missing,” Alistair fusses, always ready to shoot first andnotask questions later.
“I couldn’t because Nina was standing there.”
Alistair chuckles. “Big brother if you’re going to have her in your life, you better get her use to this shit. We’re good men...well you’re a good man, but we are also killers. She has to see the other side of your life, Zar.”
Sitting back against the couch, I rub my temples. Alistair is a wild card, but his advice is always spot on. Nina does need to see the other side of me because now she will be getting all of me not just the polite gentleman who asked how her night went.
“You’re right. Do me a favor, call Xander, and give him a heads up. I’m staying at Nina’s tonight to make sure she okay. Have everyone meet me at the club tomorrow around noon.”
“You got it, see you then,” Alistair says, ending the call.
