I caved in.
But how the hell could I not?
Seeing Juno cuddled up on the couch with the puppy was the best thing to watch, and while I prepared hot chocolates, she talked to her to figure out what her name should be.
“Do you have any suggestions?” she asked as I walked over and set the cups onto the coffee table.
I looked at the puppy, then sat down next to her and petted her gently. “I’ve never been good with names…but the first time I saw her she reminded me of a peanut.”
Juno scrunched up her nose and puckered her lips, then shook her head. “That’s the name of literally every other dog.”
She looked at the puppy and squinted her eyes, then started to whisper different things that reminded me of our relationship.
“Island…lake…ferry,” she said, then smiled brightly. “Ferris. Her name is Ferris.”
“Sounds good to me,” I replied with a chuckle. “Ferris it is.”
I leaned in to kiss Juno’s head, then reached for the cup and leaned back against the couch.
“I don’t think I can fall asleep tonight. I wanna stay up and stare at her all night long.”
“Don’t freak her out and make me her favorite,” I joked.
Juno laughed and leaned against me, letting Ferris turn onto her back to show us her belly.
“You actually got us a dog. I can’t wait to go on long walks with her. And we can take her to the island! Imagine how much fun that would be.”
I smiled at her words, knowing that what she was saying was right.
With her hand in mine, walking side by side along the gravel path on the island, and with Ferris running around all happy and excited.
“We can take her the day after tomorrow. We need to get a few more things for her.”
Juno nodded and smiled, then leaned against me with a happy sigh. “I can’t wait.”
We were both quiet for a while and watched Ferris as she slowly dozed off in Juno’s arms.
“I think it’s time for us to go to bed as well. And you gotta drink your chocolate. I put her temporary bed in our bedroom,” I told her, kissing her temple.
She nodded, then carefully got up from the couch and walked over to the bedroom to gently put Ferris into her bed.
“She’s adorable,” Juno whispered as she came back to the couch.
I gave her the hot chocolate. “She is. But you’re still my favorite girl on this planet,” I told her.
She smiled brightly and sat down next to me.
“Life can’t get any better than this,” she whispered.
I disagreed.
With every day that passed, the better life got.
All because of my sweet Juniper.
