“I’ve been doing my job keeping it on the road. It’s done nothing but conk out on you every chance it gets. Come on, Mina. It will be my graduation gift to you.

“Let’s go to the dealership this weekend. We’ll make a trip of it.”

“Don’t you have a road game you’re heading to?”

He shakes his head. “No, that’s next weekend. I’m all yours. I’ll take you on Saturday.”

“No, you won’t. I’m not accepting a car from you.”

“Why not?”

“For starters, what would your girlfriend think of you buying me a car?”

He shrugs as a scowl comes to his face. “It’s none of her business. It’s my money. My friend needs a car. I want you safe, so I plan to buy you one.”

I lean my head on his shoulder. “Thanks, Cam. I know you mean well, but I’m not taking a car from you.”

“Why are you always so stubborn?”

“Am not.”

“You are.”

“But you love me. Why complain when I’m going to get my way?”

He sighs. “We’ll see about that. Come on, I can’t fix it this time. I’ll give you a ride to campus.”

I go to grab my backpack and camera bag out of the car and lock it. Cam is scowling at his phone as he waits for me. Iwalk over to him. Once I stop in front of him, he looks up with annoyance in his eyes.

“Everything okay?”

“Yeah.” He nods. Then he frowns. “Actually, no, it’s not.”

He clamps his mouth shut and shakes his head. “You know what? Never mind. Come on, so you’re not late.”

I follow him as he opens the passenger door for me. Climbing in, I buckle up and wait for him to get in behind the wheel. He tosses his phone on the dash when he gets into the car.

“Are you sure you don’t want to talk about it?”

“Nah, not this time. Let me get you to class.”

I sit chewing my lip, not wanting to pry because I get the feeling it has something to do with Kay. That’s none of my business. I’m not going to get in the middle.

CHAPTER 22

New Girl

Maribel

I smile down at my phone as I rush to class. Cam has been sending me links to cars since he dropped me off, asking which make and model I want and like. I’m not letting him buy me a car.

As I walk to class,I note the line outside of it. When I take a closer look, I realize this is the baseball team. My mind goes back to Cam’s words.

I can’t believe he said he’d run away with me. What if I did win? Would that really be a sign that we’re meant to be together? Would Cam end up hating me for taking him from his life?

I shove those thoughts down as I walk into class. It’s silly to get my hopes up. There are some amazing photographers in this school. What are the odds that I would win anyway?

My eyes widen as I see how many players are lined up. I don’t know what I had been expecting. I read the email again on the way to campus.
