“The question is, will the hitters take care of him, or will I. If it’s me, people we love will be hurt first. If it’s your hitters, no one gets hurt.

“Cam will be conflicted, but it has to be his decision. There is karma we can’t disrupt by taking this decision from him. You have to tell him.

“You have to give him the choice and it has to be now,” he says.

I sit staring at this child. He shouldn’t know anything about Dez Demarco. Alejandro Demarco was a friend of LaSalle’s. He was to have a seat at the Alliance table.

His murder was a shock to us all. I personally felt like his brother was involved. No one could prove he was and it wasn’t my business.

Alejandro’s son has taken over in his father’s absence. The Alliance seat belongs to him. He’s young but ambitious and his uncle will have a challenge on his hands if he goes against him.

The only reason Dez is still alive is because he’s no threat to us. Or so we thought. This changes everything. Sammy is rarely wrong.

“Bloody fucking hell.”

“Chance and Cade aren’t meant to be hitters, but they will be if Dez is ignored. Talk to Cam, please.”

“Done. I will go talk to him now.”

“How do you know Dez Demarco?”

I look up to find Uri standing in the doorway of my office. I narrow my eyes at him, not knowing how he knows that name. Clearing my throat, I wave him in.

He steps into the office, closing the door behind him and takes a seat. I scrub a hand down my face. I think over what I want to tell him and decide on the whole truth.

“That asshole was planning to marry my wife against her will in an arranged marriage. He killed her father. We believe he did it because he watched us start an intimate relationship through cameras he had placed in her residence.

“Once he admitted to her that he killed her daddy, and she found out she was carrying my baby, she took off. Her cousin connected her with Symphony, and she stayed hidden with her until Dez tried to smoke her out and shot a friend of ours.

“My daddy and I were having him followed, waiting for him to do something we could use to put him behind bars to make things safe for my wife again. When he shot my ex-wife’s now husband, that was what we needed. He’s been in jail since,” I explain.

“This must have been the year I didn’t get to visit Sim,” Uri says and nods his head in thought. “Cameron, I’m going to be candid with you.

“You have become one of us, so I’m trusting you with what I’m about to say. Your wife was most likely sent to Sim because she’s an assassin—one of many around you.

“Dez was never going to get anywhere near your wife as long as she was with her. With a man like that, you don’t trust your safety to the authorities. You handle him and make sure he doesn’t lift his head in your direction ever again.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying that Sammy has given me a warning concerning you and Dez. I’m not allowed to make this decision for you. He says this has to be your choice.

“My hitters will take care of the problem. All you have to do is tell us to play ball,” he says and stands to leave.

I fall back with my mind reeling. Now Sammy’s words begin to make sense. I want to protect my family, but Dez is behind bars. Do I give the word to end a man’s life based off the visions of a child?

When it means protecting my family, maybe I do.
