It feels like I just closed my eyes when the energy in the room shifts. I pop my eyes back open and find Mr. Kyle and a blonde woman standing in the room. Mr. Kyle is smiling from ear to ear as he holds one of the babies in his arms.

Cam has the other baby as the woman stands with a sour look on her face while she glares at me. I look between the three and I can tell this is Cam’s mom.

I knit my brows, wondering what her problem is. Sim took my mom back to the house to rest and get something to eat earlier. It looks like they haven’t come back yet.

“Hey there, young lady. It’s good to see you,” Mr. Kyle says as he notices I’m awake.

“Hey, Mr. Kyle.” I give him a warm smile.

The woman snaps her head to him and scowls. Both Cam and his father ignore her. I sigh because I know she’s about to be some drama, and I’m not rested enough for this right now.

I suck it up and decide to be polite. “Hi, you must be Mrs. Perry,” I say.

“I am. I’m sorry, but I’m still confused about who you are and why we are here.”

“I’m here to meet my grandsons. You’re here because you’re nosey and hardheaded.”

“I thought you were cheating on me. I wanted to meet her for myself,” she snarls.

“I told you I was going to see our son and I would explain everything when I returned.”

“Then hopped on our jet. While our son’swifewas already in labor.”

“I hopped onmyjet and that’s our son’sex-wife. Why can’t you hear those words and allow them to sink in?”

I don’t miss the shocked look on Cam’s face as his father fusses at his mom. He shakes it off and comes to hand me the baby as he goes back to take the other from his dad to bring him to me as well.

I don’t know if he’s doing it to remove the babies from the tension or if he’s doing it to keep me from leaping out of this bed. When I see Mr. Kyle place his hands on his hips as his face turns red, I think it might be a little of both.

“Because there’s no way Kayleen divorced our son. I don’t understand why we are here and not with our granddaughter.”

“Because she’s not mine,” Cam growls. “Kay isn’t my wife and her daughter isn’t mine. If you’re not here to meet my sons or introduce yourself properly to my fiancée, you can go.”

“What’s your name?” his mother asks with tears in her eyes.

“Maribel. Cam calls me by my middle name Amina.”

“It’s nice to meet you. These little ones are darling. I’m sorry. I’m just a bit in shock.”

“I can understand.”

Mr. Kyle snorts. “Ever gracious. You did well, Cam.”

“Who are you?” Cam and his mom say in unison.

Cam seems amused, but his mother’s face has turned red. She huffs and comes to take Cade from my arms. He whimpers, but she begins to sing to him in a pretty voice that calms him right down.

Well, my in-laws will be interesting.

Missing Him

Maribel

Eight years and ten months later …

“Cade, Chance, if you two don’t clean this room I’m going to take the front wheels off your bikes and hide all your game controllers. Stop playing with me,” I call through the house.
