“You brought another girl home. That’s what?—”
My hand snapped around her throat. I stepped out of my high-rise, shut the door behind me, and slammed her into the wall across from the door. “We’re not a couple. We’re not dating. I don’t even fucking like you.”
“Don’t be like that, Ac?—”
“Who sent you?” I asked between gritted teeth.
“Nobody,” she said, squirming in my hold.
I tightened my grip so she couldn’t move. “How’d you find my place?”
Her gaze tinted green. “An Envy can always find her way.”
“You’re half Envy, half succubus,” I said, a growl clawing up the back of my throat. “You don’t have that much power in either realm. So, I’m going to ask you again, Qina. Who sent you, and how’d you find out where I live?”
She pressed her lips together. “Why is there a human in your bed?”
“That’s none of your fucking business.”
“If I can’t get it out of you, then I’ll get it out of her.”
“You touch a hair on her head, and I will suck the soul from your body.” I hurled her toward the elevators and wiped my hand on my sweatpants, heading back toward my high-rise. “Don’t fucking test me.”
After walking back into my place and slamming the door, I picked up the teacup on the counter and sipped my hot drink, a low growl rumbling through me. Someone had given her my address and sent her to find me.
To pester me.
It could’ve been fucking anyone at The Lounge last night.
Like Amon. Or that flirty bartender. Or one of my best fucking friends.
A moment later, I listened as one set of feet padded out into the living room.
I gripped the teacup harder, vowing to figure out who it was once she left, and twisted my head around to see Iza walking toward me, dressed in one of my shirts that fell down past her knees and her hair a wild mess.
She looked down at my cup of tea and then giggled behind her hand.
“What?” I asked.
“Nothing,” she said, though she didn’t stop laughing.
I grabbed another teacup from the set. “Do you want some?”
“That’s not it, but …” She quieted her giggles. “I’ll have some.”
After I poured her tea, I extended my arm for her to take the glass. When she reached for it, I pulled it a couple of inches away. “First, tell me why you’re laughing. Did I do something to make you laugh?”
For two reasons …
One, because humans were strange creatures. I thought I had them all figured out, but sometimes, one—this one—surprised me by laughing at my tea. And, two, because I wanted her to laugh again. I liked the sound.
“It’s just that your teacup doesn’t fit the wholescary demonvibe.”
“You’re laughing at the size of my teacup?” I hummed, handing her the cup.
“More like the fact that you even own teacups.” She brought the cup to her lips, paused, and sniffed it. “Wait. Does this have that weird lust potion, cum stuff inside it?” She pulled her lips away. “Because I can’t do that so early in the morning.”
My lips curled into a small smile, warmth spreading through my chest. “No.”
