“When the bond is complete, we will be able to communicate with you, too,” he says.
“I can’t wait,” I mutter. My tired brain doesn’t register the words as I fall asleep next to my mate.
I roll toward the warm body that joins us sometime later. I smell the yummy scent of King, along with the scent of the night. I kiss his bare chest. His hand slides over my hip and under my nightgown as he pulls me close.
“Sweet nighty, Firefly,” he whispers.
“Thanks, Mav liked it,” I say, hovering on the border of asleep and awake.
“I bet he did.” His chest vibrates. “Did you have a good time?”
“Uh-huh…”
“I’m glad. Sleep.”
“Okay.”
I stretch my arms over my head, my palms hitting the wall as I open my eyes. I’m alone in bed. I hear voices in the kitchen and smell food, and I smile.
I could get used to this. Two hot men keeping me warm and safe through the night and feeding me in the morning. My time with Maverick was perfect. I feel closer to them every minutewe spend together. My dragon pushes her feelings of impatience through our bond. She would rather complete the bond with them and get to know them later. The animal side of us doesn’t understand the human’s emotions.
As much as I love spending time with both of them together, it is nice to spend quality time with them individually. I should make it a point to be with Kingston alone today.
I jump from the bed, energized and excited for the day. After using the bathroom and brushing my teeth, I grab my robe and swing open the bedroom door. Kingston is at the stove, and Maverick is setting out the plates.
“Morning,” I sing. When their attention turns my way, I hear a car stop in the driveway. I switch directions and move to the door, shrugging on the fabric to cover my nightgown.
“Firefly,” Kingston calls.
“I haven’t had this many visitors since I moved here,” I say dryly, my hand on the doorknob.
“Baby,” Mav says as they leave the kitchen.
I swing open the door just as Heath reaches the bottom step. “Heath, what are you doing here?” I ask. Heath has become my friend and contact for some of my kills. He has never come to my house.
“Morning, doll,” he says. “I wanted to check in.” He stops when he sees Kingston and Maverick at my back.
“Firefly,” Kingston says, grasping my hip. “Do me a favor.”
“What?” I look over my shoulder.
“Go put some clothes on,” he says. His face is calm, but his eyes are serious and swirling dangerously. I look down and realize I didn’t tie the belt on my silky robe, and my nipples are playing peek-a-boo with the fabric.
I decide not to argue. “I’ll be right back.” I look at Heath. “Come in.” I push through my dragons and hurry to the bedroom.
Shit. I didn’t think about my mates and their possessiveness when I opened the door or my lack of dress. I hurry and strip. I almost fall on my ass as I jump into some jeans. My fingers fumble with the zipper and button in my rush and nervousness. I don’t want to leave them alone too long. I yank a shirt off the hanger, causing it to fall on the floor, but I don’t look back as I sprint to the bathroom, looking for my bra. I hit my hand on the wall next to the sink as I push my arm through the strap once I found it on the floor.
Heath is a new friend, but he means something to me. I see the loneliness in his eyes and the pain he covers with his standoffish behavior. He’s been nice to me, and I have never thought of him as anything but a friend and perhaps a brother. Sure, I’ve admired his looks and the way he carries himself, but I don’t think of him as anything more. I appreciate his trust in my abilities, not only because I am a woman but because he considers me an equal. Heath is powerful. I can feel it in my bones whenever I am around him. I may not know what he is, but I really don’t care as long as he allows me to be his friend.
I leave the bathroom, yanking my shirt over my head.
“I’m not a threat to you,” Heath says, and I quickly open the door.
“What’s going on?” I ask. King is standing with his arms crossed beside Mav. They barely allowed Heath to enter the house. I look at my mate’s fierce expression and then at Heath. He looks amused.
“I was reassuring your mates,” Heath answers. I stride fast to stand between them.
“Why would you be a threat to me?” I ask. He has never acted inappropriately toward me.
