Gus led them to where his SUV was parked, helping everyone into the car. Brittany was stuck in the back seat, crammed with Min and her sister, while Min’s mom got the coveted passenger seat. Iris smiled at Gus as he helped her up.
“You have excellent manners.”
He winked at her. “I’ll tell my mother you said so. She’ll be proud.”
“She should be.”
He hustled around to the driver’s side, and then they were off. At Brittany’s eyelash flutter, he cranked up the music, and the back seat was hopping in anticipation of the party. When he pulled up to Insatiable, the valet was practically blasted to the side by the volume of the music.
Before the valets could get to the doors, Gus was already there, opening them and helping the women out. Brittany scooted toward the door, and Gus basically scooped her up, pulling her against his body and letting her slowly slide down until her feet hit the ground.
“That was dramatic,” she teased.
“But enjoyable.”
He held her hand, handing over the keys to the valet, and pulled her inside the restaurant.
Brittany stopped in the doorway. The place had been completely transformed, with realistic scenes created around the space all pulled from Hayden’s video game. The music was pumping, and though the crowd hadn’t really started arriving yet, Brittany could already feel in her bones how good of a party this was going to be. The air practically crackled with it.
“Where to first?” Gus asked.
She grinned. “The bar.”
CHAPTER 19
GUS
When Brittany grabbed his hand and pulled him into the crowd, Gus realized suddenly that this was exactly where he wanted to be twenty years from now, following Brittany on whatever adventure she had decided the day was going to be. It was humbling realizing so much of your happiness relied on a woman who had the ability to drive you out of your mind.
When they got to the bar, she somehow managed to shift people away, snagging a spot up front. She flagged down the bartender, who immediately changed directions to come help her, another of Brittany’s superpowers. She glanced at Gus.
“You still a beer drinker?”
“Just water. I’m technically working.”
Brittany frowned, but placed the order, then turned to him. He found himself leaning over her, almost shielding her with his body in his attempt to carve out privacy for them at the bar that was becoming more crowded by the second.
“What’s that face for?”
“I didn’t realize you considered this working,” she said.
“You’re at a public event, one that you had posted you would be attending.”
“You think the stalker would come here? There’s a guest list.”
“There are ways around that. I’m just making sure you’re safe.”
Still, she frowned, looking more bothered than Gus felt the situation warranted.
“What’s really the matter?”
After a short debate in her head, Brittany shrugged.
“I guess I just thought we could be here just as us, you know. Not working, not a client. Just… two people who like each other who get to hang out while they’re dressed really hot.”
Brittany looked uncomfortable as she said it, as if she hated how vulnerable she sounded, but all Gus could hear was the blood rushing in his ears.
“Hey.”
