“Right, sorry, you’re distracting.”

He kept her with him, rolling until he was seated next to her, then handed her one of the plates from the nightstand.

“Eating in bed?”

He shrugged. “I’m fine if you’re fine.”

They sat in companionable silence, eating their sandwiches and drinking their water. Brittany draped the leg closest to him over his leg, and he kept one of his large hands on her thigh. When she was done, he took her plate, placing it with his backon the nightstand. She stayed where she was, leaning her head against his shoulder, staring at where he had taken her hand and laced his fingers through hers.

“What are we doing, Gus?” Her voice was quiet. She hated to bring reality into this perfect moment, but she couldn’t help herself.

“What do you want to do?”

“I don’t know what I’m allowed to ask for.”

He blew out a breath at that.

“Brittany, I’ll be honest. You could ask for anything right now, and I’d give it to you if it meant you were here with me for even a few minutes longer.”

He squeezed her hand for emphasis.

“I think I want to try, Gus. You and me. If you’re down for it.”

“I am very, very down for it.”

“But I can’t come between you and Robbie. We gotta fix that somehow. I don’t want you to resent me.”

He nodded. “We talked a little tonight when I took him home, but I think we need a full conversation when he’s sober and ready to listen. And I do think he’s ready to listen.”

Brittany wrapped her arms around him at that, holding him tight, and he pulled her into his body.

“So we’re really doing this?”

“Brittany, all I know is that if this weekend ends and I’m suddenly not seeing you every day, touching you every day, hearing your voice, I’m going to go out of my mind. You have become essential to me in all the best ways.”

She was overwhelmed by his words and how right they felt. Not knowing what to say, Brittany kissed him, letting herself express with the kiss what she couldn’t find words for. Gus kissed her back, the feeling somehow familiar yet completely different from every kiss before, like they were coming together in a way that was unbreakable. And although she was absolutelyterrified about what that meant, Brittany knew there was no going back from this. As much as she was it for him, she knew he was it for her.

CHAPTER 23

GUS

The sound of his alarm woke Gus up to find he was warm, sated, and completely draped by Brittany, who he vaguely remembered pulling onto him right before he fell asleep. She was there now, her head on his chest, her leg thrown over his thighs, and her arm wrapped around his stomach, holding him as tight as she could even while she was unconscious. Gus felt a warmth invade his chest, the feeling of how right this was, an affection of knowing that she was safe and satisfied and his. And he felt like an idiot for denying himself for so long.

“Shut that monster off,” she mumbled into his chest. Gus grabbed his phone, which was blaring his alarm, and silenced it. He then pulled Brittany even tighter against his body, running his hands down her length. He couldn’t get enough of the feel of her.

“Absolutely not,” she mumbled. “It is too early and I need sleep.”

Gus laughed. “As I recall, you were the one begging for more.”

“That was last-night-Brittany. Morning-Brittany is more practical.”

“Hmm.”

He let his hands wander, stroking her slowly up and down her body, pulling her legs around him, letting his hands tease the sides of her breasts. He could feel her getting warmer and more pliant with each stroke.

“Gus.”

“Mmhmm?”
