And then her arms were wrapping around his torso, her face buried into his chest like she never wanted to let go. Gus’s arms immediately wrapped around her, holding her tight and firm, letting his head tip down to smell her hair, and the world felt so right that he knew he was fucked. He wasn’t going to be able to let her go. If she wanted to leave, it would gut him.
He held her tighter, enjoying this moment for as long as possible if only because she was in his arms and that’s where she wanted to be.
“You have to let me handle those situations,” she said into his chest.
“I know.”
“I mean it.”
“I know.”
She was quiet then, just letting him hold her, holding him in return, and then he heard a throat clearing.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Min said with a wry tone. “But we’re leaving. Britt, you coming?”
Brittany gave Gus one last squeeze and then looked up at Min, nodding.
“Yeah, we’ll be right there.”
Min stepped out, and Gus met Brittany’s eyes, letting himself drown in them.
“Where are we going?”
“I told Min we’d get ready together for Hayden’s party. He has to be there early to set up, and she wanted to look nice.”
Gus nodded. “So that’s where we’re going.”
“If you don’t mind. We can stop at your condo first if you need your things.”
Gus shook his head, not willing to let her go.
“I had packed a bag, just in case you were on the go.”
“Oh.”
They stood there for another moment, feeling each other, enjoying each other, until Brittany pulled back.
“We should probably go.”
She wasn’t meeting his eyes, but Gus guessed she was feeling as out of sorts as he was. Whenever he imagined his Kickoff experience, it certainly didn’t involve feelings for his brother’s ex.
Robbie. Fuck. He was going to have to deal with that at some point.
But not now. Robbie’s angry text messages had mostly stopped, which either meant he was finally getting over himself or he was stewing something up for a big explosion. Only time would tell, but Gus couldn’t find it in him to really care. Robbie was going to need to get over himself. And if he didn’t, Gus was prepared to make him.
CHAPTER 18
BRITTANY
Brittany’s mind raced while she walked with Gus to where Min and Hayden were staying. Once at their room, he did a quick sweep of the place and nodded, then stepped out, warning her not to leave without him. Where he went was a mystery, but Brittany couldn’t help but be grateful because she was in desperate need of time alone with her friend.
Once the door closed behind him, though, Brittany felt his loss. Was she really this far gone? That she now missed him when he wasn’t in the room with her? The answer was an obvious yes, and she knew exactly how pathetic that was. When she turned to find Min staring at her, her arms crossed, tapping her foot like she was waiting for a story, Brittany gave in to her patheticness, throwing herself back onto the bed and covering her eyes.
“Okay,” she said. “Just let me have it.”
“Since when are you fucking Gus?”
“Define fucking.”
