Page 67 of Where We Met

So why is she singling out Savannah, does she sense something between us?

"I wish I could've gone with you. I'm sure it was annoying to babysit a student," she says.

"I wouldn't call it babysitting when the student is an adult." I throw the last of my papers into my briefcase. "Have a good night, Rebecca."

Gathering my things, I start to walk up the stairs and I hear her following behind me.

She's really beginning to get on my nerves.

When I get outside, I spot Savannah walking toward the parking garage. I want to run after her, but I can still feel Rebecca's presence behind me.

"I'll see you on Wednesday, Luke," Rebecca says, appearing by my side. "Unless you want to grab a bite to eat right now. I'm starving."

When I look at her, she's pushing her chest out further like I'm all of a sudden gonna lose my mind over her. She's becoming more daring and blunter with her interest, I need to be a bit more direct with her since she's not getting it.

"Look, Rebecca. I think you're a beautiful woman," I start. "But I'm just not interested in that way."

Her eyes turn dark, almost angry as she lets out a cynical laugh, making my body shiver.

"I see," she says. "Well, I guess that's that. Goodnight, Luke."

I stand in place as I watch her walk away. I want to feel bad, but she is acting like I just betrayed her. I don't owe her anything, I can't force an attraction that's not there.

I shake my head in disbelief, then turn around and head toward the parking garage.

Savannah's car is gone but my phone beeps.

Savannah: Sorry, I didn't wait. I'm on my way back to your house.

It feels good knowing she's gonna be at my house when I get there. The end of this semester can't come soon enough.

I park my car next to hers in my garage, smiling.

I'm usually greeted by Vino when I open the door, but he's nowhere to be seen. I follow the commotion I hear coming from the family room. Savannah is on the floor laughing and playing with both dogs. She makes a sudden movement with her arms toward them, and they both run circles around her, then come back for more. Her laugh is uninhibited and infectious. I stand and watch in complete awe of the things she makes me feel.

Vino finally spots me and runs my way.

"Oh, hey," she smiles at me. "I already took them outside. We were just playin' around."

"I see that." I smile as I walk further into the room. "I think this is the first time I wasn't greeted by the door."

"Aw, are you jealous?" she jokes. "Do you not like that Vino loves me more now?"

I laugh. "Watch it, Princess."

"I was gonna make us some dinner. What're you in the mood for tonight?" she asks as she scrolls on her phone.

You. I think to myself. I'm only interested in eating her tonight.

"Whatever you want. I'm not picky," I say, tucking my thoughts away for now.

"Well, that's no help," she replies with a sigh. "Fine. I'll pick, but you can't complain about it if you're not in the mood."

"I'll complain if I want to," I say, walking into the kitchen with her.

I reach for a bottle of wine and pull out two glasses, handing her one.

"Cheers." I clink my glass on hers.
