I could do that, I think.
“Then you will present me with a tear-cut pink diamond of not less than two carats.”
What the fuck did carrots have to do with diamonds?
“After that, we will go on a carriage ride through the park. . .”
I sighed and sat back while she continued to go on—this was going to be a long night.
“Oh boy,” Ava jumped up and clapped her hands.
I don’t know why she was so happy. She wasn’t five, and Chase’s bathroom sure as hell wasn’t a candy shop, yet she stood there with a gigantic smile on her face.
“Did you pee on it right?”
Seriously?
I stopped pacing and gave her a look. “I’m pretty sure I got it.”
How do you pee on something wrong?
“I’m telling you,” Ava tapped her finger against her chin. “You should’ve used a cup.”
Eww.
“I am not collecting my urine in a cup.”
“Well,” she rolled her eyes. “If you had, then we could be sure that the pad had absorbed enough of a sample to react with the latex microbeads in the test strip.”
Once again, my face dropped. Every once in a while, I had to remind myself that Ava’s major was molecular biology. What the hell she was going to do with that degree—who knows? She could find the cure for cancer or make longer-lasting gum. Either way, the world should be terrified.
“It’s fine,” I argued. But was it really?
What if I was pregnant? No, that couldn’t be possible. I was on birth control—there was no way. Sure I was eating strange things, but there were so many reasons for that.
Stress, for one. I was dating a dick that decided to take off and go on a drug-fueled revenge spree. Then there was my roommate. Her incessant need to wear pigtails was enough to send me to an early grave.
And so what if I was a little moody lately. There was a huge stuffed cow in the corner of my room. A goddamn cow! So anyone would understand why I was a little off lately. It was all Bailey’s fault, bringing her stupid country crap into my life. I should slap her. She was so damn innocent it was infuriating.
And cute, with her big eyes and little girl hairstyles.
I sniffed back a sob.
God, I loved that girl.
Wait. . .
I stopped and stared in the mirror at the tears trickling down my face. Did that thought really just cross my mind?
Fuck.
Ava sprang forward and placed her hands on my shoulders. “You just went completely white. Are you okay? Do you need something to eat? Babies need a lot of nourishment.”
Oh my god, I was pregnant. There was a literal baby growing inside me right now. I was going to have to feed this thing and give birth. Oh my god, I was going to have to change a shitty diaper.
“I can’t breathe.” My body folded over, fighting to suck air into my lungs.
“I got this. You need water.” Ava jumped around the bathroom like a ball in a pinball machine. “Or ice.”
