This was getting interesting. Louis Kessler was literally referred to as the King of Kings. At any given minute, he had power and money at his fingertips.
“Who the hell do you have something to prove to?”
Two words made me reconsider every argument I’d had with the man.
“My father.”
Diving onto campus with two motorcycles in escort was not how I wanted to start my morning. I didn’t want to start my morning taking a pregnancy test either, yet I did. Somehow I still managed to walk out in a somewhat pleasant mood. Until Jaz and that idiot, Tanner, came running up to me.
By the time I parked at the sorority house, it was safe to say that my formerly happy mood was gone. I was just going to chalk it up to a momentary lapse in judgment caused by Chase’s seed growing in my belly. So, in reality, this was all his fault.
“Why are we here?”
I looked over at Ava. “We have school.”
“Oh right.” She nodded, and I shook my head. “I think I have a test today.”
How she was acing her classes, I’d never know. I asked her once—she said something about gremlins and shoes. So yeah, that conversation went well, a lot like the one I’d had with her this morning about personal space. I swear if she touched my belly one more time. . .
“Oh man, I thought we were going to be late.” My lip curled when Bailey’s pigtails swayed as she hopped out of my car. “I’m already on Professor Ingram’s list.”
Then there was that. Riding in a car with Bailey and Ava was like being trapped in a cage with a feral Smurf and a skittish Tasmanian devil. Ava was the Tasmanian devil. She wasn’t used to people just accepting her, while Bailey was an incessant people pleaser. It was an exhausting combination.
Tanner clapped his hands and rubbed them together. “Alright, let’s get our learning on.”
Did he just say learning? Somebody kill me now.
Why did these two have to come with us? I got that Chase was worried about his brother, who was his excuse for kidnapping my entire sorority—but these two? Really?
If I needed bodyguards, I’d hire them, and they’d be a lot better than any leather-wearing prick in Chase’s club. Jaz, I didn’t mind. I actually kind of liked her, but Tanner. . .
“Do not embarrass me.” I gave him a stern look when he rolled his eyes.
“Well, this is gonna be fun,” he sighed and leaned over to grumble at Jaz. “How come she didn’t say anything to you?”
Jaz arched a brow up at him. “I’m not the one that ran around the clubhouse in a pair of assless chaps last night.”
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
“Come on,” I said to Tanner and snapped my fingers back in the direction my car before heading down the sidewalk. “My books aren’t going to carry themselves.”
“I’m not your servant,” he yelled after me.
“Keep telling yourself that.”
This might not be so bad after all. It was kind of hard to complain about having my own little lap dog, though it would have been nice if people stopped staring at him.
More specifically, girls. Not that he was any help in that department. Every smile Tanner got, he’d return with a sultry wink. I never thought I’d meet someone who was a bigger slut than Logan Hudson.
I chose to ignore it. If those girls wanted to throw themselves desperately at some idiot, who was I to argue? I had my hands full trying to teach my girls not to be idiots. It wasn’t my fault they didn’t have anyone.
Though, it was annoying. Especially the smug way Tanner was strutting behind us like a damn peacock. Now that was infuriating, and I might’ve said something if we weren’t cut off by a van peeling down the street.
It tore down the road and lurched up onto the sidewalk in front of us. At first, I thought it was some drunk frat boy until I heard a loud purr tear through the sky. That roar was unmistakable. Bikes. Not just one or two, but a hoard of them. My pulse picked up when four men jumped out of the van sporting leather jackets with familiar patches.
That’s when chaos erupted.
Tanner threw my books and yelled, “Get down!” Bullets whizzed through the air.
