The demon roars as it fights Damien, but it’s already losing. I raise my hands, calling on every bit of power I can muster, and with a flick of my wrist, I send another blast of energy straight at its chest.

The impact sends the demon flying backward, and it crashes into the wall. Its body convulses, more black ooze spilling from its mouth. With one final shudder, it crumbles into a lifeless heap.

The silence that follows is deafening.

I stand there, panting, but the sense of victory is fleeting. Something still feels wrong. The air around me is thick with darkness, and I can feel it—an energy so malevolent, so overpowering, that it sends a chill down my spine.

This wasn’t the real threat.

This demon was just a diversion.

I glance at Damien, who’s already shifted back, his face pale and drawn. He knows it, too.

Chapter 23 - Damien

Chaos is everywhere, and my instincts are screaming at me to protect Jade and Penny first. But something darker is out there, and it’s not going to wait for us to catch our breath. My wolf is on high alert, pacing inside me, ready to tear into whatever threat we find next.

Jade’s beside me, her face pale but determined. She’s already saved us once tonight, and now there’s no time to slow down. No time for fear. We’ve got to find this thing, the real threat, before it finds us.

“I know it’s out there,” Jade declares as she cradles Penny in her arms, glancing around the darkened woods. “That… thing I felt, it wasn’t just the lesser demons. There’s something bigger.”

“We’ll get it,” I say, “but first, we get Penny somewhere safe.”

Jade hesitates, but I can tell she agrees. The weight of being a parent is hitting both of us hard right now, knowing that one wrong move could end in disaster.

I hand Penny off to Leah, who’s already shifted back into her human form. “Take her to the chapel, and don’t leave until I tell you it’s safe. No exceptions, Leah. Watch her with your life.”

Leah nods without a word and takes Penny before heading toward the safety of town.

As soon as they’re gone, Jade says, “Let’s go find this bastard.”

I’m not about to argue. My wolf is practically salivating at the chance to tear into whatever threat is coming next. Alec wasalready leading his pack away from the neutral grounds, but now the scent of blood, smoke, and something far darker fills the air.

We head deeper into the woods, where the smell of sulfur is thick as hell. I can feel it crawling under my skin, setting every nerve on edge.

And then I see it.

“Damien,” Jade whispers, ready for the fight. “Look.”

Through the trees, I spot Alec and members from all three packs—what’s left of them—trying to fend off something massive. Its form looms large in the shadows, emaking the trees look like twigs by comparison. Black scales glisten under the pale moonlight, slick with blood. Its eyes glow a deep, vibrant red, and its jagged horns scrape the sky.

This isn’t just a demon. It’s their king.

Alec’s men are attacking from all sides, but it’s like hitting a brick wall. No matter how hard they bite or claw, it doesn’t flinch. Doesn’t even bleed. The thing is practically toying with them, batting them away like flies.

Jade steps forward, eyes blazing with a mix of fury and fear. She starts to raise her hand, her magic already sparking around her fingers. “I have to—”

I grab her arm. “No. Not yet.”

She whirls on me. “Damien, if we don’t stop it now—”

“We’ll stop it, but not like this. From this far away, you could hit any one of them.” I gesture toward the clearing where Alec and Gray are fighting desperately to keep their people alive. “We need to be smart about this.”

She hesitates, but I can see the logic sinking in. She nods tightly, and we move forward, sticking to the shadows.

Alec’s howl breaks through the night as he charges the demon, slamming into its side with all his strength. The beast doesn’t even flinch. Instead, it turns and snaps massive jaws at him like a gator. Alec barely manages to duck in time. He rolls to his feet and dodges at the last second.

I don’t wait any longer; I shift mid-run. My muscles stretch and bones snap into place as my wolf form takes over. Alec and the pack are struggling, and there’s no time to waste.
