We’re both so wet I feel it dripping as he lays on me. You’d think it would be gross, but it’s such a turn on, knowing how much we pleased each other. Knowing how good we are together. His arms surround me, his biceps cradle me, and his choppy breath whispers in my ear, almost setting me alight again. Declan Harris is the sexiest man alive, and he seems to be mine. Under my spell that I didn’t know I’d cast on him. Lips kissing me up my neck, chest, and then on my lips, he looks at me with his dreamy blue-green eyes, all satiated and as sexy as hell. “You bring things out in me that I never knew I had, lass.”
“Aye, same here. I never had sex like this before.”
“Same.” He frowns. “It would sure be a shame to waste it, Moira.”
My fingers comb through his hair. “It sure would. But I don’t think it’s right, Declan. You’re bound to get hurt. And something tells me that you’ve been hurt before.”
He nods once for emphasis. “Aye. I have. But by a woman much different than you.”
“You barely know me, Declan.”
“While that may be true, there’s something about you that draws me to you, Moira. There’s no denying that.”
“I feel the same, Declan. But I don’t want to hurt you.”
“Well, lass, you didn’t hurt me just now.” He says, half teasing.
“This is sex, Declan. Not the real world.”
He pulls out of my carefully, and lays on his side, leaning up so that he can look at my eyes. “Why don’t you tell me what happened in Scotland, lass? You can’t hurt me by telling the truth.”
My gaze goes to his chest. I can’t look him in the eye when I say this. “It’s not something that I’m proud of. And part of the reason why I fled Scotland was so that I wouldn’t have to talk about it to anyone.” I look at him quickly. “It’s not that I don’t trust you. And I’m sure that you’ve already uncovered enough about me to incriminate me, so I feel like I’d need some kind of corroboration, to make my story stick.”
“The man that researched you was incompetent, Moira. Anything you tell me I know will be the truth.” He pulls the blankets over us, and I’m thinking that it’s not only for warmth and comfort, but also so that I don’t feel so exposed and vulnerable.
I slide a finger down the side of his cheek. “Why ruin such a wonderful moment, Declan?”
He sighs and snuggles in next to me. “Okay, lass, but you’ve got to give me something to go back with. My cousin Malcolm found your panties and bra, and he promised me he wouldn’t rat on me unless I got the whole truth. It sounds like high school drama, I know, but he’s not kidding.”
I can’t help but gasp, and then I spit out a laugh. “Oh no!”
He nods. “Oh, yes. He pulled your bra out from between the couch cushions in the gazebo, and then not a breath later, he spied your panties on the pool deck. If I’d known that he was paying me a visit, I would have tidied up, but that’s my life, lass.”
“Shit.” I chuckle, as if I’ve just been caught with my pants down. “You must have been so embarrassed. I’m so sorry. We were in such a rush when we left, there was no time.”
“I know.” He concedes. “But I’m serious, lass. You’ve got to give me something.”
I lie back down, next to him, as he pulls me close under the covers. He kisses my lips and rubs my nose with his, a gesture so pure and sweet, it almost draws tears to my eyes. And with that, I fold. “My da is a greedy cocksucker. There’s no other way to explain it.”
“My da always said that when investigators are looking for the perpetrator, the easiest way to do it, is just to follow the money.”
“Your da and I would get along great, Declan.” I chuckle matter-of-factly.
“Easy, killer. We’ve still got to get you on his good side.” He snuffles softly, rubbing his nose on mine again.
I kiss his lips, playing along. “Anyway, my brothers are just as greedy, and they all hated my maternal grandfather, since he was as rich as they come, and he wouldn’t give them a dime.”
“Sounds like your granddad was a wise man.”
“He was. Especially when he left me his money. All of it.”
He lifts his head in a sort of sideways nod, as he’s lying sideline. “I see where this is going, lass.”
I continue. “Da was in every shady business deal you can imagine. And he was doing well for himself for a time. Hired an assistant and everything, but then he started asking for too much, and the lad had problems of his own, so he couldn’t give up the job on account of the money that da was paying him.”
“And you couldn’t help him, because you didn’t know. The lad was too proud.”
“Exactly. Anyway, when granddad died, da got very bitter and nasty. My brothers started to worry that he was getting involved with underground things, and I’d moved out. I was in medical school at the time, living on campus. Years went by and I didn’t have much to do with him.”
