I rubbed my temples, a small smile appearing on my face.
Did sharing a soul with a wolf make one go insane? Or begin to go down the idea of spirituality and what a person could be?
As I had thought before, I had known that I would die one day, but now as a wolf that day could be centuries in the future.
Some of the wolves I knew within the Starlight Pack were hundreds of years old. The elders have seen wars and the creation of a country, of a civilization.
And here I was, possibly looking into a future that I hadn’t planned.
Or maybe it always would have been mine. I was a friend of the Pack, after all. And though finding a mate seemed far out of the question, there were ways to become Pack without breaking the newly instated law that the government had on how to become a wolf shifter in these lands.
There was a knock on the door, pulling me from my thoughts, and I cleared my throat, sensing who it was.
I frowned, sensing? I inhaled and was nearly assaulted by a thousand different scents that were too much for me. I sneezed, let out a growl, an actual growl, and slapped my hand over my mouth.
“Jason? I’m coming in.”
Kaylee walked in, opening the door, her eyes wide as she stared at me, my body practically radiating with tension as I had one hand over my mouth, eyes wide.
She blinked at me, a small smile playing on her face.
“I just heard you growl. Are you okay?” She reached forward, put her hand on my chest before she pulled back as if the touch had singed both of us.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to touch you without asking. Damn it. You okay?”
Her wolf was in her gaze then, I could see the gold. And my eyes felt different, everything was in slightly sharper focus as if I could see things I hadn’t before.
I blinked and realized that I didn’t need my contacts. I didn’t need anything.
I could see.
“I’m fine,” I sighed as I lowered my hand. “I feel like an idiot, though. I’m getting used to all these new senses. I can see.”
“And I bet you can smell more, hear more, and it’s going to be a lot all at once. When you’re ready to shift and the moon pulls you, it’s going to get even harder, but we’ll be there for you. We’ll help you learn how to deal with this new body of yours and what it means to share a body with a wolf.”
I swallowed hard. “So, there’s another soul inside me?”
Warmth infused me, was it my wolf? Yes, my wolf began to pace within me, and I could almost visualize it as he moved within me, getting to know his new surroundings just like I was getting to know him being there.
Kaylee smiled softly and held out her hand. “First, let’s get you a shirt, because I’m going to be honest, it’s tough to think with you shirtless.”
I blinked. “Really? I mean, come on, I know I look okay, but okay.”
Kaylee snorted. “We’re mates. I think you’re hot. I think you knew that. And, well, I’m usually pretty blunt. I don’t hide my feelings, even though sometimes I feel that I need to. I know we have a lot to talk about, with what happened out there on the fields, not just with the attack, but with what happened after. We also need to talk about whatever serum that they’re using or whatever’s going on. But first, come up. Let’s get that shirt on you so I can see. And then I’m here to answer your questions, I promise.”
“I want to kiss you right now.” I hadn’t even realized that the words were coming until I blurted them, and she smiled softly.
“Good. Because I want to kiss you too. However, the Starlight Pack is waiting to meet you.”
I froze, confused, and oddly wary. “They know me.”
And Kaylee was Redwood. Would that mean we would be different Packs? No, that wasn’t right. Why the hell couldn’t I focus? Everything was just too much all at once.
“They want to meet your wolf. Don’t worry. We all want to make sure that you’re going through this as smoothly as possible, considering the circumstances. Now, what did I say about your shirt?”
My lips quirked into a smile, and I moved past her, my hip brushing against hers. We both froze, and I swallowed hard, my legs practically going weak. I could smell her, that scent. That was what I had scented through the door.
It was Kaylee. Mine, all mine.
