“So not the time,” she growled.

“I know. But we’re going to figure this out. Together.”

And at the first broken howl, the first growl that sliced the air, I knew that our time was here.

We wouldn’t have to go out and find the mutant wolf.

He had found us.

Chapter 21

Jason

I could sensethe wrongness right outside the wards. Riaz and his wolves were ready for what was coming, we weren’t alone, and we had to take it down.

“Stay at my side,” Kaylee ordered, and since she knew what she was doing, and I was only somewhat trained, I would listen to her.

“I would rather have you safe behind the wards, but I know that Riaz wants to make sure that we get samples and firmly knock down whatever this is. So you have to be here.”

I rolled my shoulders back, blade in hand. “Sounds like a plan to me.”

Then the mutant wolf crawled forward, black drool sliding down its fangs as it came towards us.

“Dear goddess,” Parker mumbled from my side as he shook his head. “That’s monstrous.”

“Just a little bit,” Riaz growled.

“Are you getting pictures?” Parker asked, as Reed began to snap photos. “Yes, but we can’t let the rest of the world know about this.”

“No, we take care of it. Together.”

When the rogue mutant slid his hand across the wards, I could hear the searing of flesh, but it didn’t back down. It wouldn’t.

It didn’t understand.

There were others with him, not mutants, but those men with the tranq guns, and we needed to stop whatever was happening before it got worse. Before they killed any more people than they already had.

I didn’t know what was going to happen next, or the plan, other than for me to stay by Kaylee’s side, but then one of the soldiers in black came forward, his hand around the throat of a teenager.

Everyone froze, and Riaz let out a growl so low it made my own wolf cower. I nearly went to my knees, and Kaylee did the same.

I had never heard the power of an Alpha with that voice before, and I never wanted to hear it again.

“Elijah?” Riaz asked.

“I’m sorry,” Elijah whispered, his voice low.

“Elijah doesn’t live in the wards. He lives with his human grandparents an hour away.”

“His parents?” Kaylee asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“They were two of the wolves taken down by this monster,” I whispered.

Pain filled her eyes, and I swallowed hard. Elijah was a wolf but wasn’t fully into his strength yet. And somehow, this man had gotten him. The team was trying to lure Riaz and the others out. And from the way that Riaz was ready to take anyone down just then, it might’ve worked.

“Come out here, Alpha, let’s play. Then you can have your little wolf Pack.”

“Kyle,” Kaylee snapped.
