My heart swelled at the thoughts of my love searching for me, killing any who stood in his way or not providing him with the information to find his queen.
I should wait for him.
My chest tingled when I pondered where to wait. There were two dead bodies here. Was there anyone in the house? My breath caught in my chest, and my insides quivered as I moved towards the door. I didn’t know what I would find when I opened the front door, but this wasmyhome.
I twisted the doorknob. Locked.
Time to put this new body to the test.
With my newfound strength, I pushed my shoulder into the door and broke the lock.
“Ah. You’re home.”
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
CASSIE
“Michelle?”
My jaw fell to the floor.
“Cassie? Well, this is awkward.”
“I should say so. What the fuck are you doing in my house? And where’s Damon?”
Michelle shrugged. “Last I saw him, he was leaving the waiting room in front of council chambers.”
“So, was he asking them for help to find me?”
“Oh honey, I don’t think so. You know as well as I do kidnapping a human goes against the code. He was more pissed off that they allowed it to happen in the first place.”
Her flippant attitude made the hairs on the nape of my neck stiffen.
“How did you even get in here?” I asked her, my fists curled into a ball.
Michelle shifted herself closer to me, lifted her nose and sniffed.
“I see whoever had you,” she sorted. “Promoted you.”
The corners of her lips pulled up, and my eyes narrowed and focused on the white, sharp fangs on the inside of mouth.
“I see I can say the same for you, Michelle.”
“Sure can,” she sang.
“Which lucky schmuck got the pleasure?”
Michelle’s annoying smile grew wider. I didn’t have time for her games. I had a husband to find in all the turmoil that had transpired.
“Look, Michelle, I don’t have time for this. Forgive me for being rude, but congratulations on joining the elite. Now, get the fuck out. I really must be going.”
I opened my broken front door, and stepped to the side.
Michelle tilted her head. “Damon turned me, Cassie.”
My body went numb.
“As a gift for helping him gain access to the Council,” she continued.
