Please.
Except . . . wait . . .Something nudged at him, but he couldn’t . . .
“Yeah,” he said, turning back to Conrad. “Maybe Tommy took Kyle out and then Penelope because he was trying to silence them.”
Conrad pulled up to the Sonic. “Yeah. Except what about Ty?”
Ty.
“Why shoot Ty?”
Jack shook his head. Got out. Looked at the Sonic, and it hit him. “She’s got my car.”
Conrad had hiked up the collar of his wool coat. “Yeah. She swiped your keys from the house.”
No Geo Tracker in the lot. His mouth pinched as he followed Conrad inside. “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” floated out from the dance hall, and he walked in and spotted the wedding party nailing the steps behind Oaken.
Across from her groom, Boo was grinning, wearing a dress.Wow,he hadn’t seen that coming, but then again, maybe he didn’t know her as well as he thought.
Maybe he didn’t know any of them, really.
His fault, and he meant to change that.
He walked up and Boo spotted him, then ran over to him. Julian called after her.
“Jack! I’m so glad you’re here. Did you find her?”
“Penelope?”
She frowned. “No. Harper. She was supposed to be here a half hour ago. And you’re late too. I’m worried.”
He put his hands on her shoulders, leaned down. “Okay. I’ll find her. Any idea where she might be?”
“There was a guy she wanted to interview. She thought he might be able to help her find Penelope.” Behind her, the music had stopped, and Oaken and Stein walked over.
Jack glanced at Stein, who just gave him a nod. Whatever that meant.
“Who did she go talk to?” And his stomach was already clenching when she said, “A guy named Tommy.”
He closed his eyes. Then he stood up, turned away, and put a hand to his mouth.
Stein followed him. “You okay?”
Probably not. “I don’t know.”
Julian was clapping his hands, trying to round them in, and Jack really wanted to put a hand around the man’s throat. Instead, he turned back to Boo, found his voice, the one that he should have had days ago. “I will find her. And Penelope. I promise. You just nail that dance for tomorrow’s reception.” Then he winked.
Boo stared at him as if she really needed his words, so he smiled. An easyI got thissmile.
She took a breath. “Okay.”
He gestured with his head to Stein and Conrad, who walked away with him. He pulled out his phone and tapped open an app.
“What’s that?”
“I’ve got a GPS tracker on my Geo.” A map opened, and he widened it, zoomed in. Stilled.
“Yeah?”
