Glancing at the food, my appetite is lost to the throes of longing I have to return to my ordinary life. It was a life without much going on, but at least it was a life I didn’t fear. I can’t deal with the unknown.
My skin crawls with a fearful shiver that overwhelms my entire being just as tears well in my eyes and a lump forms in my throat.
When the bedroom door is pushed in, I stifle the urge to cry. I won’t show Stryker my weakness, and continue putting up a strong, fighting front. Sniffing to retract the sob lodged in my throat, I keep my chin held high as I watch the door.
To my surprise, it doesn’t open up just enough to slip something on the side pedestal. Instead, it comes all the way in to reveal a stunning woman at the door.
Inwardly, I gasp as her strikingly gorgeous face smiles at me. With long blonde hair cascading in waves across her shoulders, her blue eyes sparkle with a warmth that somehow feels familiar.
“Hi…” she greets, her voice as soft and delicate as her creamy skin. “You must be Camilla.”
I nod as if her observation was a command for my gentle reaction. “Wh—who are you?”
She steps into the bedroom and gently closes the door behind her before turning to me with a reassuring smile.
Somehow, the dread and fears I had before slipped away in her presence, surprising me.
It’s as if a soft, golden glow emanates around her like a visible aura as she walks in.
“I’m Olivia,” she reveals, the soft notes of her voice carrying to my eardrums to provide a sense of calm.
Short and curvy, the woman wears a kaftan that’s almost identical to mine, just with more blues on the paisley patterns, while mine are lilac. She saunters forward as if she’s dancing on subtle footsteps that make no sound.
“You’re gorgeous…” I mutter under my breath, the praise falling from my lips in awe. I’ve never noticed how beautiful other women were except to compare myself to them and feel worse about myself.
But this woman carries herself in such a way that I wouldn’t even dare to compare myself to her. Too stunned by her ethereal beauty as she saunters forward, I stare into her ocean-blue eyes as if she hypnotized me.
“Have you seen yourself in the mirror lately?” she giggles softly. “You’re more beautiful than I imagined…”
I blush when she’s close enough for me to catch her sweet, floral scent. “I stopped looking in the mirror a long time ago.”
The woman, Olivia, sighs. “Let me guess… You don’t think you’re beautiful enough?”
Why does she wear a knowing smile?
Is this another trick?
Why are my insecurities quelled around her?
Shaking my head and snapping from my daze, I frown at the woman. “What are you?”
“What? Oh—” her voice breaks off as she purses her lips. “I’m human, like you.”
A wave of relief washes over me. Not hypnotized anymore, I can tell she’s true to her word when she rakes her eyes over me from head to toe.
“Stryker is a lucky man…” she smirks with an appreciative glint in her eyes.
“A dragon,” I correct her. “And no, he’s not lucky. Neither will he ever be,” I retort.
Olivia raises a brow. “Because you don’t think you’re beautiful enough?”
“It’s not that!” I snort, but it’s like she hit the nail on the head when she made that observation. An observation that I wasn’t even aware of before. I stare at her intently, my brows furrowing.
Why does she have this effect on me? To dig up a deeply buried feeling of insecurity that had me questioning why the dragon man would want me. After witnessing how he magnificently transformed into a majestic dragon, the idea that I was meant to be his mate sounded absurd.
“You’re lying to me too. You’re not human,” I speculate, to which she winces as if I’m the one who just hit some nail of hers on the head.
“I’m not ordinary, no,” she admits hesitantly, pulling out a chair from behind the oak desk before taking a seat to face me.
