“Yes, sir.” She gave me a faux-salute and a tiny smile.

I straightened, eyes roving over her not-naked-enough body. “I have so much more I plan to do to you.”

Her breaths continued coming quickly. “Don’t let the food burn.”

With a nod, I rushed to the kitchen. The Wellington timer had gone off, so I threw on my oven mitts and pulled it out, dropping it unceremoniously onto a cooling rack. The vegetables had a few more minutes, but I wasn’t about to accept another interruption, so I pulled them early. Everything would be cold, but cold food and hot bodies went together well. “There you are,” came a soft voice from behind me.

“Hey, Emmett.” I didn’t turn around.

“Not planning on jumping, are you?”

“Just watching.” I sniffled. “You know. Living in the shadows.”

He stopped, well clear of the edge. “You said you needed to talk.”

I held up my great defeat, my red-wrapped chocolate shame. “I stole this chocolate bar.”

“Oh, sweetie.” Emmett sank down beside me and began rubbing gentle circles on my back. “It’s been five years. What brought this on?”

A wad of cotton lodged in my throat, and the stupid tears started again. “Drew kissed me.”

Emmett nodded slowly. “What happened?”
