Unless Noah had set a trap for us inside.

Scarlett’s gut said he hadn’t. Given all the times I’d put my faith in her gut, I wouldn’t question it now.

Although shehadmisjudged Wyatt’s role in everything.

Chapter 43

Drew

Ihurriedthroughtheback door and skipped the ancient elevator, preferring to rush up the stairs. Why was Vanessa here? It must have been details about Wyatt.

Halfway there, I stopped, staring upward.

Craig knew I was coming into the office. He hadn’t mentioned Vanessa. That meant she was heading there of her own volition, and probably as a surprise.

Why would she feel comfortable visiting him at our office in the middle of the night?

They’re sleeping together, Drew.It was the only explanation that made sense.

Unless…

I’d never given her a key to our office, but considering she’d lied to me about only having one key to our apartment, what if she’d stolen one of my keys? Or made a copy of it?

What if she was planning to sneak into Wyatt’s office and root around for her gossip site?

I redoubled my efforts on the stairs.

How had I let that woman into my bed, let alone into my home? She didn’t have an honest bone in her body.

That’s exactly why, Drew. Honest people make you want to be a better person and you don’t know how to do that.

Honest people like Jayce. Who made me want to stare into her eyes while I poured everything I was into her. Made me want to make stupid declarations I couldn’t live up to.

Three times before I’d charged into the building, I’d checked my messages in case she’d sent me anything. Emmett might have shown up to ensure she was all right but more likely, he was there to pick her up. The Reynolds team had learned something or had a lead.

Did she trust me enough to tell me? Not that there was any reason to fill me in. But still, a tiny voice in my head hoped she’d send me an update on what she was doing.

I crested the top of the steps to the fifth floor and stopped dead.Deep breath. Straighten the tux. And be prepared to walk in on the two of them doing things I shouldn’t see my boss and my ex doing.

Thelobby and the main hallway were empty. I canted my head, listening.

Craig’s voice was the first I heard, hushed, coming from an office down the hall. “You shouldn’t be here.”

Vanessa responded, “We need to act fast.”

“No, we need to be smart.” Craig huffed. “Drew’s on his way. He can’t find you here.”

Whatever they were up to, they were in it together. I walked forward slowly, sneaking so I could hear as much of their conversation as possible.

“What do you want me to do? Hide in the closet?” Sarcasm dripped off her words.

“Maybe if you hadn’t been harassing the Reynolds woman he was working with, it wouldn’t matter. But after that little show, he won’t want to see you.”

She sighed. “You sure about this Italy thing?”

I paused. She’d told me a headhunter found her. Was Craig going with her?

“You’ll love it,” he said.
