“And recover it if everything looks safe?” I finished with the second strap and stood, testing the leg out.
“That’s the plan.”
Good. With all the Drew-distractions gone, I’d be as sharp as ever. And with my brace on, there’d be no holding me back. “Give me five minutes to get dressed.”
Chapter 41
Drew
Afewhoursnextto Jayce Monroe and it was like I’d forgotten all my training. Truth and honesty practically fell out of my mouth. What was I doing telling her all those things—that I’d dreamed of her, that I wanted to makeloveto her?
Had I been trying to makeherfeel better after everything Emmett told me?
Or trying to makemyselffeel better?
Hell.
‘What if you stayed in Washington for a few weeks?’ I’d almost said. ‘Spend some time getting to know each other outside the job?’
What if, Drew?
What the fuck?
Apparently, getting into bed with her didn’t get her out of my system. It just lodged her even more firmly inside my brain.
I had nothing to offer her but heartbreak. Parents who’d lied my entire life, a career spent manipulating people, a cheating ex, a best friend whose death was covered up by the government he’d served, and a boss who demanded we twist the truth until it was unrecognizable.
Those were my influences. No better than hers.
Jayce and I were two screwed-up people who tumbled into each other and couldn’t tell up from down. It was nothing more than sex. We’d do it again and we’d damn well enjoy it.
Nothing more, Drew. Remember that.
After a short drive, I turned onto the busy street where the Bishop and Associates headquarters were located. Four stories of red brick with arched windows decorating our office level at the top. Shops and restaurants lined the bottom levels of the buildings—many of which had been private homes at some point—all crammed together in the Dupont Circle area.
Before Emmett’s lecture, I’d considered opening Wyatt’s office safe to see what was inside. Now Craig wanted me to deliver that access. I’d wanted to wait for the police, but as Craig had said on the phone—Wyatt was one of us. Not just a Bishop team member who’d betrayed us, but a former CIA agent who might need protection.
How long had he been plotting behind our backs?
Who had how much on him?
And how did Scarlett’s ex factor into this? The dragonfly and the golden bird had to be linked.
I should have asked Jayce for more information while she was in a vulnerable state.
Not like I was thinking with my brain while we were together.
I slowed as I approached the narrow alley where I could access the small parking area between the buildings on our block.
But before I turned in, I spotted a familiar figure.
Vanessa.
Heading into the Bishop building.
She wasn’t going into the tiny café on the bottom level, which was still open at this hour. Nor did she pause at the outer door to the office building, which should have been locked.
I picked up speed and continued past her to get a better view.
