Now that it’s no longer raining, and there’s no danger of the river flooding, we take a moment to stand by the banks.
I slide my arms around her, pulling her back to lean against my chest. We fit so well together. In and out of bed. I hope she sees that.
“Is this the River Isla?” she asks.
I nod, resting my chin on her crown. “Glynis was right.”
“She was. It’s beautiful.”
“It is, but I meant she was right about you.”
Hadley turns her head to the side to look up at me. “What do you mean?”
“I mean your hair is as stunning as the sun rising. And your eyes, well, your eyes put this river to shame.”
Hadley’s lips curve into a grin. “I had no idea you were such a smooth talker.”
“It’s not smooth talking when it’s the truth.” I kiss her cheek. “And as much as I hate to leave, we should probably see about digging our car out so we can drive back to civilization. I heard someone’s stomach rumbling.”
“Is that what you’re calling yourself now?” she asks. “Someone?”
I give her ass a fond pat, and she gasps, nudging me in the ribs. I can’t stop smiling. Even with the prospect of pushing that toy car out of the mud ahead of us, I can’t stop smiling.
Helping Hadley into the driver’s seat, I lean in to give her another kiss.
She giggles against my mouth. “What’s gotten into you?”
“I think we both know it’s more about who I’ve gotten into.”
She slaps my chest but grins against my lips. “I thought you were in a hurry to get back to civilization.”
“Maybe I’ve changed my mind.” I catch her bottom lip between my teeth. “We could live here.”
“What would we do for food?”
“We both know how to fish.” I trail my teeth along her jaw. “And I happen to know you’re good at foraging.”
“What about our company?”
I catch her earlobe. “We can relocate it here.”
“How will we promote it without computers?”
I pepper a kiss across her cheek. “We’ll use our phones.”
“What happens when our batteries die?”
I droop to the curve of her neck. “We’ll go off the grid. Use word of mouth.”
“And what happens when my birth control wears off?”
I kiss the top of one of her breasts. “I guess we’ll just start having babies.”
She chokes on another laugh and pushes me away. “You’re being crazy.”
“Crazy for you.”
She rolls her eyes. “You’ll never convince me that you really want to live off the grid having babies in the wilds of Scotland.”
