There’s no one I’d trust more.

“Good. I’ll probably have a fight on my hands dragging our mate away from the others for the trip out here, but I’ll figure it out and call you back tomorrow with the details.”

“Tomorrow?”

“We might not get there for a couple days, but I should know when we can be there when I call.”

I relax a little knowing I have more than a day to wrap my head around what he told me.

It sounds complicated, and I’m not sure I know how I’ll feel about it until I see her.

“Sounds good.”

“Great. I’ll speak to you tomorrow.”

“Speak to you then,” I echo, before the line goes dead.

I slip my phone back into my pocket and I grab my purse to check my face for signs of shock.

My cheeks are a little flushed, so I give it a minute before I put the compact away. I take my time walking over to the door to let my guests back into the room.

Shadow is sitting on the bench across from the door, and he jumps to his feet when I look out at him. “That was fast.”

Pete turns slowly, taking his phone away from his ear and putting it into his pocket as I give him what I hope is a normal smile.

He frowns at me. “What did I just miss?”

“I was just getting some information I needed from a friend.”

And I got a little more than I bargained for, but that’s nothing you guys need to know about.

Pete glances at Shadow. His Omega shrugs.

“Lunch should get here soon,” I tell them. “You can come back in if you promise to be quiet while I work. Otherwise, you can wait out here. Either way, I’ve got stuff to do.”

“We’ll be quiet,” Pete tells me.

I step back and let them in.

Shadow smiles at me. “Did you change your hair? It looks good.”

“Uh, no,” I murmur, feeling self-conscious because clearly, he’s noticed something is different about me since I made my call.

He’s an Omega, dummy. He knows what you’re feeling.

If he does, I wish he’d tell me what it is, because right at this moment, I have no damn idea.

Chapter Nineteen

Pete

Initial checks on the security staff employed at the academy came up clean, as expected. If one or more of them has dirt, it’s been rinsed. The deeper checks are being done now, but those are going to take longer, so now all I can do is wait.

“I ordered you my usual,” Shadow tells me as he sits down.

“Burger and a shake?” I ask, knowing I’m right.

“And fries and those fried pickle things.”
