I walk him over to the desk.
I go over the same steps I went over with Erika.
He nods along as I’m talking.
“Thanks for this. I owe you one.”
“Well, you can pay me back by spending the night with Brooke.”
I blink at him. “Um, what?”
His steady gaze tells me he’s not joking around.
“Please,” he adds. “Just think about it.”
“I’ll … speak to Brooke after this whole decoding thing.”
“You make sure you do that.”
Oh, he’s deadly serious.
I can feel my heart pounding like crazy as I walk back to the office.
Pete takes my hand when I get to the doorway.
He leans in, “You’ve got this.”
“I’ve got this,” I murmur.
We step into the office and close the door.
Chapter Seventy-Three
Pete
It’s kind of cute to see Lana so flustered over the blonde in the crazy dress. It’s obvious how much they’re attracted to each other. Too bad that dress looks like something a goth clown would wear to a nightclub. It’s black, but it has a rainbow of colors in the skirt’s folds, and the top half is a sleeveless, sequin-studded corset. It’s three different kinds of too much.
Brooke sits down on the couch nearest the desk, and Rob takes his time in deciding to sit down on the opposite sofa. Lana leads Damian behind her desk, letting him take her seat and just showing him where the files are on the screen.
“Oh, and I had a weird email come through from a guy who has no idea Geraldine is dead, and Warren is in prison.”
“You’re kidding?” Brooke looks over her shoulder at Lana.
“Nope. Some guy called Wilfred …”
“Masters?” Brooke asks.
“How did you know that?” Lana shakes her head.
“He’s like eighty years old. He probably has dementia. He was always showing up at the socials and being escorted to Geraldine’s office.”
“Creepy,” Lana murmurs.
“Oh, you have no idea. He would practically drool over us from the side of the dancefloor.”
Lana shivers. “Well, it gets worse. He’s one of Warren’s clients. He was emailing to complain that he wasn’t sent the Omega he paid for.”
“I’m not surprised,” Brooke says. “Then again, none of the donors being his clients would surprise me. They’re all cut from the same cloth.”
