Maybe I could help Sophia with a party. I asked, “What can we help you with?” Opal explained, “Well, I need to plan an anniversary party.” I questioned, “When’s the anniversary?” Opal responded, “March sixteenth.” I said, “That gives us plenty of time. How many years will you have been married?” Opal laughed, “Oh it’s not for me, it’s for our Alpha.”
I was stunned, “Alpha Sophia is married?” Opal answered, “Yes, he’s a handsome young man. Anyway, I’ll email you the details.” I agreed, “Sure. I’ll come up with something for you.” Opal laughed, “That’s great. I want Sophia and Chase to be happy with the arrangements.”
My heart stopped. No. I shook myself because I was being silly. There were other men named Chase. I tried to casually ask, “Chase?” Opal replied, “Yes, Sophia’s husband is Alpha Chase Daniels.” The phone dropped from my hand. I fell to my knees. I whispered, “No.”
He was married? Chase was married. I was pregnant with his children, and he was married. Pain exploded in my heart. Tears clouded my vision. A hand gripped me. I looked up. I didn’t know I could be this glad to see him, but his name came out of my mouth, “James…”
James hung up the phone. He asked, “What happened, Lexi? Are you alright?” My phone was ringing. I couldn’t look at it. I whispered, “He’s married.” James' face contorted in anger, “Who was on the phone?” I asked, “You knew? That’s… that’s his situation? He’s fucking married?!”
James answered, “Yes. WHO was on the phone?” I answered, “Someone from his wife’s pack. Opal wanted to plan their anniversary party. Oh god. They celebrate anniversaries.” James assured me, “It’s not like that, and I know Chase wasn’t going to have the party.” I couldn’t stop my sobs.
My phone blared warning tones for my calling card alert. Five of them. I jumped up and looked. The codes were for Ted, Sally, Nadine, Reagan, and Susie. I yelled, “FUCK!” I hit the buttons on my desk. My BA outfit came up. James said, “Now isn’t a good time for you to fight. Let me go.” I disagreed, “That’s my family out there needing help, James. I’m going to protect them. When the mask goes on, Lexi’s feelings are left behind.” James whispered, “Lexi…”
I put on my costume and shot out of the room. I looked at my phone to get their location. They were in Chase’s territory. My heart clinched as I bitterly thought it was Chase and Sophia’s territory. I pushed that aside. I ran as fast as I could. I shot wolf after wolf with my arrows on my way there.
I reached Ted, Sally, and Susie first. Matt’s sister Jenna had clearly been guarding Susie. She was hurt and unconscious. I was ferociously killing people as Ted fired round after round from a gun. I got to them. I said, “I’m clearing a path, Ted. Get to Haley’s.” Ted argued, “I can’t leave you here!” I ordered, “You get Sally, Susie, and Jenna the fuck out of here! NOW! GO!” I pushed Ted through his opening.
A wolf I recognized as Kevin helped me clear them a path. Once I saw they’d all crossed the border I focused back on what was happening. I helped Nadine and Reagan by shooting my arrows. A man shifted back. He yelled, “Leave, Black Arrow. This doesn't concern you.” I disagreed, “I’m afraid it does, and I don’t take orders from you. Who are you?”
The man answered, “Gamma McCann. The Alpha here, Chase Daniels, killed my brother for touching Luna Reagan. It’s only fair she dies too.” He shifted back into his wolf and everyone focused on Reagan. He bared his teeth and went for her throat. I didn’t even think. It was an instinct. I dove in front of her, and his teeth sank into my throat instead of Reagan’s.
I gurgled, choking on my own blood. I heard a scream of rage. I didn’t know whose it was, but it certainly wasn’t mine. My thoughts went to my babies. I could get through this for them. The world needed to know them, and I was going to make sure that happened somehow.
The earth began to shake, and it parted. All the rogues fell into it, then were crushed by the earth coming back together. Except Gamma McCann. He was half crushed with his top half out of the ground from his torso up. He screamed in agony. “SHUT THE FUCK UP!” I heard Haley yell.
James appeared in front of me. He whispered, “Lexi, it’s going to be ok. You hang on, you hear me? We just found each other, and I want to know you. You have to fight to live. You don’t understand everything, and you need to know.”
Haley’s eyes were that strange color again. She glared at him, “I don’t know who the fuck you are but back the fuck away so I can heal her.” He replied, “I’m James. She’s my cousin.” She was vibrating with anger, “Ok, back up so I can heal her.” He squeezed my hand, “It’s going to be ok.” He backed up.
Haley started to heal me, and just like that we were both pulled away from this realm. I was floating in water and Haley was with me. I couldn’t talk. My babies. What about my babies? I wanted to scream and beg for Haley to answer me, but nothing came out. After what felt like forever, I could feel my voice.
I sat up getting my footing in the water. I asked, “The babies?” Haley assured me, “They are fine. I promise, I healed all of you. It will shorten your pregnancy though.” I didn’t care as long as they were fine. I asked, “Where are we?” Haley answered, “Faerie and we are leaving right now.”
Haley popped us to her island in the Hackura realm. I cried, “He’s married, Haley.” Haley stalled, “What?” I repeated, “He’s married.” Haley shouted, “WHO THE FUCK TOLD YOU?! I’LL SLIT THEIR FUCKING THROATS!” I cried, “Opal….” Haley ranted, “WHO is Opal? Well, at least it was not the ass who’s clearly your family member who was fighting rogues when I showed up. Did I punch him for no reason?”
I asked, “James? He’s my cousin and not an ass. I swear he told you all that.” Haley shrugged, “I wasn’t really listening.” Her eyes were swirling different colors, and for once I saw the pain on her face. What happened to her?
Before I could ask, she squeezed my hand and my pain hit me again. I cried, “He’s married. It hurts Haley. Everything hurts.” Haley told me, “It’s not like an actual fucking marriage.” I asked, “Is that why he didn’t mark me? He wanted to be with us both?” Haley scoffed, “Fuck no. I’d have killed him. They’ve never even had sex or even kissed.”
That pulled me up short. I asked, “What?” Haley explained, “They were supposed to get an annulment. Chase married Sophia.” She spat her name, “So that she could take control of her pack.” I cried, “That doesn't make sense.”
Haley agreed, “Yes, well we are the only rational fucking people left on the planet apparently. When Chase was in Europe, they were supposed to file for annulment but apparently her treacherous Gamma caused her to become a scared little promise reneging bitch. I’m positive my husband knows more about this situation. He’s been very busy trying to help her, not that she’s asked. They’ve got some reverse sexist bullshit going on trying to prove they aren’t sexist. Chase will not be married by the end of today.”
I whispered, “I wanted to marry him.” Haley took my hands, “Hey, you can marry him if that's what you want.” I cried, “I’m pregnant and he’s married.” Haley blew out a breath, “You’re in shock. Fuck.” I questioned, “This is why Heath doesn’t like him, right?”
Haley sighed, “That’s a whole barrel of whiskey.” I corrected, “Cats. It’s a barrel of cats not whiskey.” Haley asked, “What fucking psycho puts cats in a barrel? That’s just mean. UGH, not the point. Lexi, what do you want?” What did I want? Chase and for my heart to feel like it wasn’t ripped out of my body. I was certain it was on the floor of my office.
I told her, “I want to think, curl in a ball, and not have anyone bother me.” Haley simply agreed, “Ok.” She popped us to a different house. I asked, “Where are we? Where’s my phone?” Haley answered, “We are on Bjourn’s island.” I couldn’t make sense of that.
I asked, “Why?” Haley answered, “They will look on my island for you, but they won’t look here. Your phone is back on my island with a sign for Harper’s boytoy lover. Now, I can’t leave you alone like this so...” She popped and came back with a confused Astrid.
Haley told me, “Astrid was on a mission that’s not supposed to be over for a few days. I sped it along, but no one will think to ask her where you are.” Astrid snorted, “You sped it along subtly too, Haley. You blew up a man’s chest. I didn’t even know you could do that. How angry are you? And what is going on with your eyes?” Thank god someone else noticed.
Haley answered, “I’m very fucking mad. I need you to not tell Bjourn you’re with Lexi. He shouldn’t even ask because you’re not supposed to be here. My eyes, I don’t know. I assume they are gold, but you wouldn’t ask about that. I feel magic inside me ready to strike. It feels like it’s coiled like a snake. I’m sure that’s bad, and I’m sure I don’t give a fuck.” I whispered, “The magic from the ritual you did for Emmaline.” Haley shrugged, “Probably. I’m sure Aiden could tell me if I asked.” She might want to do that.
Astrid looked between us. She said, “Alright. What’s going on? Where are you going, Hales?” Haley gritted her teeth, “I fucking warned her.” I asked, “Who?” Astrid groaned, “Oh no…” Haley argued, “Oh fucking yes. I’m going to stomp on her like a bug.” I corrected, “Squash.”
Haley yelled, “COME ON! Does no one ask the saying people HOW do you squash the bug? BY FUCKING STOMPING ON IT! I’M STOMPING ON HER BITCH ASS!” I cried, “I helped her. I found her brother for her with Frank. She’s his wife, and I’m the other woman. He’s having an affair with me. He’s my everything, and I’m… I’m his mistress. Oh god.” I was going to be sick. Haley hissed.
