I heard giggles. Emma, Emmett, Jasmine, and Joe ran over. Four little boys were behind them. I laughed asking, “Who are you guys?” One giggled, “Mommy! You’re being silly. I’m Keaton this is Keith.” I teased, “Naturally and those two?”
One laughed, “Aunt Lexi you’re silly today! I’m James and this is Jordan.” I looked over at my brother. I snorted, “For giving Uncle Jordan such crap about being obsessed with J names, you’re pretty obsessed yourself.”
Heath shrugged, “If you can’t beat em’ you join em’ Lex. I thought I taught you that.” I rolled my eyes, “If you have ten kids like we do you’d better come up with a different letter.” Chase said, “WHOA look at you. You want ten pups now?”
Keaton laughed, “There are at least ten of us dad. The Moon and War Goddess said we couldn't all come. Keith and I argued we are the second oldest so we should meet mommy next.” My jaw dropped, “Did you say at least?! Wait, are you real?!” Keaton flashed around cackling at me.
My dad laughed. I turned around, “Are you real like they are?” My dad said, “Yes, we weren’t allowed to tell you unless you figured it out. Princess, I have missed you.” I started crying again. He wrapped me into a hug.
He whispered, “You tell your brother I’m so proud of you both. Your mom and I both.” I asked, “Can you tell me how to get into the fairy vault stuff?” My dad cringed answering, “Sorry, I’m not allowed to tell you that.”
I said, “Just when I think Haley can’t get more impressive, she does.” My mom said, “The promised fairy siblings are very powerful. Stick close to your friend.” I agreed, “She’s like the little sister I never got.” My dad kissed my mom. He said, “Maybe if we’d had more time.” I urged, “Let’s just enjoy this. I don’t know how often I can come here.”
My dad sternly told me, “You’ll stay in your reality with your real life. With your mate and your brother.” I asked, “Couldn’t they come?” My dad explained, “This is a treat, Princess. You’d get tired of it if you ate it every day.” I shook my head, “I could never get tired of seeing you.”
My mom interjected, “Yes, but those two little boys need their mom in the real world. As do Emma and Emmett.” I looked over to see my kids playing. My mom said, “We do all kinds of things for our children.” I apologized, “I’m so sorry I didn’t hear anything and didn’t call for help that night.”
My mom shook her head, “My sweet little girl. You couldn’t have done anything that would have led to a different fate for us. You and Heath weren’t harmed and that’s what is important.” My dad reiterated, “I’m so very proud of him. He’s a much better leader than I ever was. You tell him that I said that.” I nodded, “I’ll tell him.”
Heath yelled, “Hey! Stop talking in hushed tones and share mom and dad.” Keaton jumped into my dad’s arms. He greeted, “Hi, grandpa.” My dad laughed, “Yeah, I guess so kid. Hi.” Emmett came over and puffed up his chest, “Mommy saved me while I was in there.” He pointed at my stomach.
Chase choked, “Something you want to tell me, Sweetheart?” I laughed, “I don’t know that I want to explain this.” Emma said, “It’s us daddy! Me and Emmett.” Chase laughed, “How is that possible when you are right here?” Chase took off chasing Emma. She squealed and ran. She was so fast.
My mom laughed, “She’s just like her mother.” Chase shifted. Emma ran and jumped on his back. My mom fanned herself, “My, my, my, isn’t that just something?” My dad feigned hurt, “I am standing right here.” My mom laughed, “You will always be my love. Our daughter’s string is just charming, handsome, and he turns into a literal animal. No wonder they have ten kids.”
My face turned red. I yelled, “MOM!” Heath laughed, “She got you there, Lex.” My dad asked him, “And you two? How many are you having?” Keaton yelled, “At least Six!” I laughed, “You just like to spill secrets, don’t you?” Keaton deflated, “Yeah I don’t think I was supposed to.”
I laughed, “I think it will be ok. I’ll keep the secret for you.” Keaton smiled and hugged me. He said, “Thanks mommy!” My mom said, “Ladies man that one.” I laughed, “We’ll see. He’s not even conceived yet.” Heath scoffed, “What? He’s right there.” My dad laughed, “Of course he is, son.” He sent me a wink.
We sat down and had a picnic. Tears filled my eyes watching my dad with the kids. My mom sat down next to me. Chase was laughing and joking with Heath and my dad. Allie was twirling with Emma and Jasmine. My mom whispered, “Lexi…”
I wiped my tears away, “It’s not fair. This is how it should be. Dad with mine and Heath’s kids running around laughing and having a good time. Chase and Dad having fun together. It’s not fair that this will never be real. Hanson took it all from us. He took you and dad from Heath and I. Dad will never hug me in reality again. He will never run and play tag with my children. It’s not fair mom.”
I broke down sobbing and she held me tight. She consoled me, “Shhh Lexi. You’ve been so strong. My tough as nails little girl. You don’t even take my dad’s shit. Or your dad’s father’s shit for that matter. That’s impressive.” I sniffled, “Yeah well they are jerks.” My mom laughed, “They are stubborn old fools. I can at least say I was under a magical spell.”
My mom whispered, “I’m not supposed to but think about all the things happening. You went off and played Denise because Noah was making you feel unsafe. Why would he do that?” I answered, “To be a jerk.” My mom rolled her eyes, “He has a reason.” I grumbled, “He’s a crazy person.”
My mom said, “That’s a given.” I mused, “I guess... oh my god.” My mom smiled, “There it is.” I speculated, “He’s trying to get me to go somewhere I’ve felt safe before. He knows I wouldn’t go to the Shroud.” My mom assured me, “It will come to you.”
My dad came over, “Allison, you always were a rule breaker.” My mom shrugged nonchalantly, “Her wolf already thought of it anyway. It was hardly telling.” My dad laughed. Chase asked, “What did I think of?” I answered, “A new pack house.”
Chase laughed, “We’ve lived there for some time now.” I nuzzled his neck, “And what a brilliant idea it was.” Chase sat down and tapped my nose, “I know you’re lying.” I teased, “Do you?” Chase smirked, “I do. I’ve got your number, Lexi Daniels.” I smiled, “Do you now? I like the sound of that name.” I really did. He kissed me then pulled back, “I do.” I conceded, “I guess you should.”
My mom gasped, “Oh Lexi! This ring is so you.” I smiled, “I thought you’d hate it.” My mom admitted, “I wouldn’t wear it, but it’s you. You always did love black.” My dad laughed, “She is the Black Arrow.” My mom sighed, “Yes, I tried to get you to have some color, but you just gravitated towards black. Who was I to stop you?”
I laughed, “Don’t worry. Haley throws in some color for me sometimes.” My mom sighed dreamily telling me, “You’d look amazing in green.” I promised, “I’ll find something black and green just for you.” My mom kissed me on the forehead saying, “I love you so very much.” Tears filled my eyes when I replied, “I miss you both. I know I keep saying it, but I just do.”
My mom said, “Go back and be my brave little girl. You have a destiny to fulfill. Centuries from now, we will be together again.” I startled, “Centuries?” My dad laughed, “Fairies. You had a fairy join your pack. A fairy who shared his light with his wolf. When he joined the pack, his lifespan was shared.” I sat back, “Wow.”
My dad commented, “We needed a fairy back in my day.” I laughed, “You might have had one that thought they were human.” My dad agreed, “True enough.” I hugged him. I said, “I don’t want to leave you.” My dad assured me, “It’s ok. Just open your eyes again.”
I opened my eyes, and I was still floating in the tank. I wiped my eyes and thought about the tank being open. It seemed our group was all done at the same time. Haley snapped us dry and into comfy clothes again. She said, “Let’s go eat some dinner.” I laughed, “It’s already dinner time?” Haley nodded. She popped us to the banquet hall where tables were laden with the food.
Emmaline looped her arm with mine, “How are you doing?” I smiled admitting, “Good. I got to see my family.” Emmaline smiled, “That’s really beautiful.” I asked her, “What did you see?” Emmaline wiped tears from her eyes. I said, “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to upset you.”
She waved her hands, “No, it’s just hormones. I wanted to see my time with my dad. He raised me the first year of my life, and I didn’t know until recently. I was essentially viewing our time together. It was beautiful. I spent years thinking he didn’t want me. Or even care about me. Logically after watching the videos he took, and seeing the pictures, I knew he loved me. Seeing the whole year through was something special.”
She conjured tissues and blew her nose then added, “I saw all the things he did for me. He refused to get a nanny. He said he could do everything. He had help but he mostly did everything himself. He’s amazing.” She fanned her eyes. My own eyes teared up.
