He pleaded, “Beta McAlister is already dealing with so many people calling him Ben. The poor man doesn’t have time for all this paperwork. He’s having an identity crisis! Plus, and god I hate to say this, but GAP is right. You should’ve had a mentor. I picked several that were overlooked by you, it’s only slightly hurtful. I myself had a mentor when my dad up and left on his crazy conspiracy wackadoodle quest. Mentors are great.”
Sophia was quiet. Heath encouraged, “Sophia, it’s a good idea. I had mentors for my position. You never had that. Give yourself a chance. A chance to learn and find yourself. Please.” Sophia thought about it for several moments.
Alfred Junior decided it was his turn to weigh in, in support of his Alpha, “It’s a good idea, and we can both have one.” Beta Dylan shouted, “OH ME! PICK ME! ME! ME! ME!” Beta Alfred Junior laughed, “I don’t need you to move to the territory, but I’ve been leaning on my dad too much. I probably pushed Sophia into her shell more, and that’s not my job.” Dylan said, “Ahhh my little protégé. I have always wanted one of those.” Alpha Lucas groaned.
Sophia sighed, “I don’t need someone to tell me how to do anything. I’m fine.” Haley popped up onto the table. She spit out facts, “You backed out of promises over five hundred times. You blackmailed members of everyone’s packs to keep your fucking secrets. Which like I said it impressive but shitty when you consider you’re an Alpha and they aren’t. I promised someone I’d stomp on you.” Her eyes swirled to solid as she stomped on Sophia’s tail who screamed in pain.
Alpha Eric grabbed Haley and tried to calm her down. She shook as the magic kept trying to take hold. King Aiden sighed, “That means Lexi is grappling with everything. As if everything keeps hitting her over and over again. Haley shook with silent sobs as Alpha Eric held her. He nodded to his pack doctor who seemed exasperated as he tried to check on Sophia. I’m sure he linked Alpha Eric he wasn’t a vet.
Everyone made plans around me. Sophia agreed to the mentor, and Alpha Eric kept a vice grip on his mate when the magic seemed to snap within her again. Bolt howled in pain in my head and my limbs felt like it would take great effort to lift them. I’d hurt my mate so much Alpha Eric’s couldn’t handle the pain, and she’d been tortured for thirteen years of her life. I was the worst person alive.
The sun set. People tried to make me eat, but I couldn’t. Searches were being planned for Eddie. Matt and Derrick were the ones contributing for our pack. I sat staring at my phone hoping Lexi would call but she didn’t.
King Titus moving caught my attention because Haley was now beside me. He looked ready to grab her, but I hoped he didn’t. I wanted her to hit me. Instead, she calmly said, “I’m going to go to her now, Alpha Chase.” I whispered, “Just call me Chase.” Beta Dylan said, “That won’t do. Besides, you have a new name that I can’t tell you yet, but you’ll laugh when you hear it. Alpha Skywalker will do for now.” I didn’t even care.
I begged, “Please bring her back to me, Haley.” Haley agreed, “When she’s ready, I’ll bring her to you.” Haley popped out. Alpha Eric said, “Aiden, it seems my wife forgot to turn Sophia back to human form. She also forgot to say where she was going other than to Lexi. You seem to know which is annoying. Do share.”
Aiden said, “I don’t think she forgot to turn Alpha Sophia back. I’m certain her plan is to leave her as a snake until Lexi returns.” Alpha Eric groaned, “Aiden, just change Alpha Sophia back into a person.” Aiden chuckled, “I don’t want my sister to turn me into a snake next. I have things to do.”
Alpha Eric growled, “She never turned you into anything as a child, and she won’t now! CHANGE Alpha Sophia back!” King Aiden sighed, “Ugh, you are only fun and understanding when my sister is around. I sent fairies to Alpha Sophia to explain what would happen if she didn’t cooperate. She chose not to knowing things could happen. I even mentioned being turned into an animal without legs. I’m so nice and no one cares how much I help out.”
Alpha Eric glowered at him, “Aiden, please. You know without magic fighting her every second Haley wouldn’t have done that.” Aiden must have agreed, because he chanted and Sophia transformed back into herself without horns or green skin. Alfred caught her from falling. Her foot was crushed where Haley had stomped on her tail.
Alfred asked, “Can we get a fairy ride back to our pack? Sophia needs a doctor.” Eric’s pack doctor looked moderately offended. King Aiden huffed, “Wolves are so demanding. For the record, this only works without my sister’s charm because everything is finally resolved.” Luna Emmaline said, “I’ll take you.” She popped to them and popped away and came back a second later.
Alpha Lucas nuzzled her neck, “Pop us home.” Dylan shouted, “NOOOOOO! We have to know how it all ends, Lucas! Are you crazy! The end has NOT happened! Lexi still has to come back. Bombs need to be dropped!” Alpha Lucas groaned.
Kincade went stiff beside me. I looked at the clock. It was one minute past midnight. Kevin asked, “Brother?” Kincade ran to the door and ripped it off the hinges. Carry stood on the other side. Her family was trailing behind her calling her name, asking where she was going. She smiled at Kincade.
He growled, “MATE!” Carry threw herself in his arms and started crying, “I wanted it to be you so badly!” Kincade twirled her around. Growls sounded from the door. Kincade whirled and put Carry behind him. He growled menacingly.
Liam demanded, “Give her back.” Kincade snarled, “She is MINE!” Liam growled back at him. Alpha Eric warned, “Liam!” Liam charged towards Kincade. I got in his way and shoved him back. I warned, “Try me, Liam. Just fucking try me.” Bolt sounded tired, “He might be able to take us right now.” Maybe his wolf, but I was running on fury.
Beta Dylan raised his finger, “Can I just say today is so not the day to try him.” Liam growled at me. He yelled, “She’s my little sister!” I retorted, “And she’s my lead warriors’ mate. You won’t take her from him because I will not let you. They belong together, and they want to be together. According to my…”
I faltered before continuing, “Mate they’ve been flirting with each other for months. They’ve always liked each other. So, BACK OFF!” Carry said, “Liam, please. I love him. I loved him even before I knew we were mates. I was dreading my birthday because I didn’t want to find out Kincade wasn’t my mate.”
Liam’s father put his hand on his back, “Son, you had Bexley out of the room and mated with her within a few moments after meeting her. You don’t have a stone to throw here.” Liam looked around me to Carry who was peeking out from around Kincade’s back.
He asked her directly, “You love him, Carry?” She nodded, “I really do.” Liam looked at Kincade, “Do you love her?” He confirmed, “I do. I liked her from the moment I met her. I have fallen for her every day since then. I love her.” Liam nodded, “Alright. Have her back for her party tonight then. My mother worked very hard on it.” Carry giggled.
Luna Emmaline popped over to them. She offered, “I’ll take you where you want to go.” Kincade looked at me, “Alpha?” I ordered, “Go, Kincade.” Kincade told her, “My place then.” Luna Emmaline popped them out.
My dad said, “Son, we should go.” I whispered, “I can’t. Haley will bring Lexi back here. I can’t go back to our house she won’t be there.” Luna Emmaline popped back. “Yeesh. They were practically naked before I got out of there.” Liam groaned, “Why would you say that?” Kevin laughed, “My brother has been waiting for her since he turned eighteen.”
Alpha Eric said, “Alpha Chase, I’ll let you know what I know as soon as I do. I can link Haley to bring Lexi to you.” My eyes widened. Of course! I focused, “Lexi? Lexi? Sweetheart?” Nothing. I sighed. Alpha Eric told me, “Haley said she used magic to calm Lexi down. She’s sleeping, that's why she’s not answering your links.”
Heath clapped me on the back, “She’ll come back to us, Chase. She will talk to us.” She wasn’t mad at him. Jasper and James were still here too. Jasper asked, “How are you keeping yourself from your string, Heath?”
Heath answered, “Because I’m a leader. My people need someone they can go to, someone who trusts. Sophia barely trusts her own shadow right now. I’m hopeful we can all turn this around, but I just don’t know if we can. I don’t know how we will move forward. Lexi is what’s most important right now. That’s how I’m doing it. Lexi.”
Jasper nodded, “The love for you siblings. I get it. What if we take you and Alpha Chase out for a drink?” I shook my head, “I can’t.” Heath sighed, “Let’s get Chase home first.” Emmaline agreed to pop my dad, Susie, Ted, and Sally home, because we’d all come in one car before they’d had to flash in. Heath and Matt practically dragged me to the car. I was wrecked.
I knew wolves were weak without their mates after they marked them, but I never expected to feel this awful. Somehow, I ended up in my room. I couldn’t stay here. Her scent wasn’t strong enough. I opened my window and jumped down.
I saw Gamma McCann. He was groaning as I walked over to him. He said, “Alpha Chase at last.” I let Bolt take over. I ripped his throat out and watched him die. Haley could be pissed all she wanted; he was mine to kill. I shifted and ran to Lexi’s house.
I opened the door and walked up to her room. I grabbed a hoodie of mine off the floor and sobbed into it. I pleaded, “Come back to me, Sweetheart. I’m so sorry. I love you.” Time stopped meaning things to me. I didn’t eat or sleep.
