I asked, “You’re part of Unger’s sect of demons? He and I are friends. If he wants to speak to me, then he can come get me himself.” One sneered, “Unger is dead. We originally thought the Hackura Fairy Princess killed him, but really it was the Black Arrow. We received information that you could give us answers. We want justice.” Well, to be fair I had killed him.

I shook my head, “I don’t know where you got your information, but I can’t help you. Sorry. I truly am sorry to hear about Unger.” One girl stepped forward, “He offered you the title of his spear, and you turned him down.” I sighed, “I did not want a chosen mate, I’m sorry I mean Spears since that’s what you call them. I did not want to be someone’s chosen. I have someone out there made for me. Unger and I didn’t even have a sexual relationship.”

She hissed, “He was EVERYTHING to me! I want you to give me the Black Arrow. Our information says you can!” I argued, “You’ve been lied to.” I was going to find this leak and kick in their fucking teeth. One demon grabbed my shoulder, and all hell broke loose.

The two blonde wolves from before jumped into the clearing ripping two demons apart. I buried my knife into the throat of the demon grabbing me and severed his carotid artery. I was locked in a battle with two of them when the smell of sandalwood hit me. Oh god. Not now when I needed to focus!

I shook myself and took an opening to end one of the demons fighting with me. A wolf grabbed the other. I looked around sighing in relief, “You guys are like my guardian angels. I’m going to have to set up a recurring gift to be sent to Alpha Chase weekly at this point.”

The wolves were a few feet away from me when both their heads snapped in the opposite direction. I turned to face the other way as my body was demanding I follow the sandalwood smell. A black wolf surged out of the tree line heading directly for me. I couldn’t move.

Somehow the wolf’s eyes were full of terror. I wanted nothing more than to calm him down. He jumped and knocked me to the ground, and I heard him whine in pain. My heart hurt at the sound as everything in me fell into place.

I whispered, “Oh. my. God! It’s you! You’re my string.” The wolf shifted back into Alpha Chase. My voice caught in my throat. I was overwhelmed by emotions. I heard the two blonde wolves ripping something apart, but I couldn’t look away.

Tears filled my eyes as I stated, “It’s you. Are you ok? Are you hurt?” Chase’s eyes glazed over. “Had... to…. protect…. you….” His words were slurring. I asked, “What?” It looked like a huge effort as he put his hand on my face, “You’re… so…. beautiful… and… mine.” It sounded like he tried to growl the words.

Against everything my body wanted I shifted out from underneath him and gasped. There was a tranquilizer dart in his side. I pulled it out. I had a counteragent in my house. I’d have to take him there. I was slightly panicked at the thought, but he was my string. He was welcome in my home, and the thought of not being with him right now was unbearable.

The two guys shifted back and grabbed some shorts that were around. Chase’s chest was moving, so I knew he was ok. It was as if my whole world was riding on the cadence of his chest moving. My poor brother losing his string had to worse than I thought.

My eyes trailed over the rest of Chase’s body. I gulped, forcing myself back from biting his butt. I admonished myself it’s not the time, Lex. My mouth watered again.

One of the wolves spoke, “Luna, we need to get him to the pack doctor. Then make up a story about how the hell this happened.” I asked, “Luna? Oh god, that’s right.” Then I laughed, “I’m your Luna and Ted is your Beta male. God, our War Goddess got that one right. No need for a coverup, gentleman. I have a counteragent at my house. I’ll take him there, and he can link you that he’s ok. Right? He can do that, can’t he?”

They looked at each other. The same one answered, “Yes, he can. Can you pick him up?” I laughed, “Of course I can. Stand back and be amazed.” I paused then asked, “He’s been having you guard me, hasn’t he?”

They both looked at each other before one confirmed it, “When he cannot himself, yes.” I smiled, “Thanks for the assists lately. Eight demons is a lot for one person.” Both smirked. One guy chuckled, “You seemed to be doing just fine without us.” I agreed, “I’m very capable, but a helping hand is always appreciated.”

I hoisted Chase up onto my shoulders, much to the surprise of the wolves. I turned asking, “What are your names?” The one closest to me gathered himself first, “I’m Kincade Farmer this is brother Kevin.” I said, “I’m sure I’ll be seeing you around. I’ll try not to lose you guys too much now that I know who’s following me. Sorry about that. I’m guessing it didn’t make your lives easy.”

Kincade laughed admitting, “It would make our Alpha happier, and our job easier if we didn’t lose you. He understood, but he was not happy.” I stuck out my hand to them, “Well, it’s nice to officially meet you guys. Race you guys back to my house.” They both shook my hand.

I winked then took off. I was a little slower while carrying Chase, but I beat them easily. I took a deep breath and went past the barrier. This was big for me. I was already trusting him, even though I knew he had some situation going on in his life. I put him on the couch.

I squeezed his hand, “You already own my heart, Alpha Chase. I just hope you don’t break it. I won’t survive it this time.” I hit my panels and pulled out the pressure syringe. I hid everything again and put the sensor onto his thumb.

I traced my hands over his face. His eyes opened and he sat up with a start. I greeted him with a smile, “Hi Chase.” He growled, “I don’t have any semblance of control anymore, Lexi. Not with you so close.” He yanked me to him, crashing his lips onto mine. I moaned and became acutely aware of the fact that Chase was still naked and very hard beneath me.

Right Direction

Alpha Chase looked at his brother sitting outside where Lexi’s protected house was. I sighed, “Go home Cameron.” Cameron looked at me, “I guess I might as well face the music with Reagan. Are you alright?” I admitted, “No, I’m not alright. I don’t understand what’s going on. I can’t ask my mate directly because I’m an idiot.”

Cameron disagreed, “You aren’t an idiot.” I yelled, “YES, I AM! I married Sophia. That was stupid.” Cameron lowered his voice, “It was the right thing to do. No matter what anyone says. We may be evolving as a group, but four years ago we were not moving anywhere near acceptance for women leading packs. Sophia had the right to be their leader. You didn’t mate with her. You were simply allowing her to take her rightful place among her pack.”

Tears filled my eyes, “I had no clue her Gamma betrayed her. I didn’t even fucking care that I hadn’t heard a word from Gamma Wallace in months. I was just glad one member of her staff wasn’t a thorn in my side. Why didn’t she tell me? I could’ve helped her.”

He shot me a look. I amended, “WE could’ve helped her. Instead, my mate is inside that area alone. She thinks she’s going crazy because she can smell me, which means I’m going to have to stay farther away from her. I hate this whole fucked up situation. I want to be with her, comfort, and protect her. I want to know what the HELL is going on! Why don’t her people know that Henrick is dead?”

I ran my hands through my hair. I lamented, “I can’t even thoroughly protect my Beta’s mate because I can’t out him to his family and pack. That has to be on Matt’s timeline, but I sent them to stay in an ally’s territory. I feel like the worst damn Alpha in the history of Alpha’s.”

Cameron crossed his arms, “I’m not leaving you like this. I can’t and I won’t. You are not a bad Alpha or person. You’re my big brother who has a heart of gold. Honestly, I think it makes you a great Alpha. Are you the stone cold, brutal Alpha Eric Conners? No, but he’s not quite as hard anymore. Ruthless if you cross him, but the Princess has thawed his cold frozen heart.” That appeared to be true.

He continued, “You see the good in people. You are the FIRST Alpha in the HISTORY of Alpha’s to be cool with your Beta being gay. Not only supporting him for who he is, but not making him have a female as his wife. Do you even know how big that is?”

I snorted, “Alpha Lucas, Alpha Eric, or Alpha Nick would’ve done the same.” Cameron agreed, “Sure, but they didn’t have the chance. You did and you don’t give a shit if anyone gets upset. You’re there for your friend and Beta.”

I questioned, “So?” Cameron sighed, “So, you’re not a bad Alpha. You are a fair man. It’s not like you're not aggressive when the situation calls for it. You and Sophia were only eighteen when you made this agreement. You didn’t have much life experience or experience leading a pack. You just knew she should get to lead as you would’ve if anything had happened to dad. That’s not a bad thing.”
