Isaac sighed in relief, “Thank god. I was going to punch the shit out of you if you were hiding it. You are waiting until your annulment comes through then. Frank would try to drag her to the main house to keep her with you.” I nodded, “Yes.” Isaac argued, “She’d be safer.”
I growled, “She will be safe my way so long as my father doesn’t lie to her guard detail. She thinks he hates her and had a panic attack at the thought of him trying to keep us apart.” Isaac winced but said nothing.
I took the door off the car when I parked. Nadine was wiping the blood off my father’s face. His nose was already healed. I snarled, “GET OUTSIDE!” My dad stared at me, “I was attacked. I guess the Hood himself watches over his people on the outside of their Shroud. He didn’t like that I’d upset Lexi.”
I didn’t bother to respond to that. Good for Heath. I repeated, “I told you to get outside, and I will only tell you one more time.” Matt groaned, “Fuck me.” My dad straightened, “I’m still your father.”
I growled, “Right now you’re an arrogant shit who is defying their Alpha. I warned you.” Reagan and Nadine screamed as I picked my dad up and threw him through the glass back door. Cameron was putting on a pair of shorts and stared in shock as did the pack members who were around.
I growled, “I challenge you to a fight.” My dad’s eyes widened in shock. Cameron shouted, “CHASE!” I said, “Frank Daniels, I challenge you to a fight for the rightful title of Alpha of Yellow Hills Pack. Do you accept?” Nadine and Reagan were crying. My dad answered, “Yes, I accept your challenge.”
He stood and we attacked each other. Nadine’s crying got to him and I used it. I was so pissed off and all I could see was Lexi crying about how he didn’t like her. Lexi panicking and hyperventilating. I saw him trying to keep her from me. She was MINE! My dad didn't even land a single shot on me. I blocked everything he came at me with. He was bleeding profusely when I landed another punch that knocked him to the ground.
He held up his hand, “I yield. You win the challenge. You are the rightful Alpha of this pack.” I stared at him and looked around, “Make no mistake here. I AM YOUR ALPHA! I will NOT be disrespected. I am a fair leader, but I have my limits. Get back to your daily duties.” Everyone dispersed quickly, avoiding looking in my direction.
Isaac helped my dad up. Isabella was clutching her chest in shock. Nadine ran to Frank with tears in her eyes. I linked Matt, “Get him in my damn office.” Matt agreed, “Ok. To your office we all go.” I stormed inside. I went upstairs and showered in my room. It felt wrong. I wanted to smell Lexi here. I should smell her in here.
Matt was waiting when I came out. He threw me a plastic baggie. I opened it and Lexi’s scent hit me. Matt explained, “I thought I might have these moments where I needed Lexi’s scent. Ted ferreted a bunch of her t-shirts away before she washed them. Are you calmer?” I growled, “He tried to keep her from me. She cried.”
Matt nodded, “And you kicked his ass. Seriously, what happened to you in Europe? You were like a machine.” I shrugged, “It wasn’t Europe, it was Lexi. He hurt her feelings.” Matt said, “I know he did.” I stalked down to my office. I slammed the door open and Matt pulled it shut behind him.
I ordered, “There will be NO MORE bugging, stalking, or threatening people.” My dad argued, “I didn’t threaten her.” I growled and using my Alpha tone I said, “YOU WILL NOT GO NEAR LEXI SCOTT! Are we clear?”
Before he could answer a man sped into the room. He nodded to me, “Alpha Chase, I have a message from the Hood.” I recognized him. He was the man who picked up Lexi the night of the club. The one who let her run away. I asked, “And you are?” The man smiled, “I am Isaiah.”
I asked, “What’s the message?” Isaiah said, “The Hood hopes whatever happened between Lexi Scott and Frank Daniels is now resolved.” My dad snorted, “He sucker punched me.” Isaiah said, “You clearly insulted one of our people. The Hood checks up on all businesses outside the Shroud. Your timing of harassing Miss Scott lined up with when he planned to visit Bull’s Eye.”
My dad grumbled, “Of all the rotten luck.” He had no idea. Isaiah continued, “Should there be further problems we will be back.” I assured him, “I’ve ordered my father to stay away from her.” Isaiah nodded, “I will report that back to the Hood. We do not wish to have a problem for this pack as we all love TeleTed. That will not deter us if this continues.” Isaiah glared at my father then left.
I sarcastically spat out, “Fabulous. Now, we are getting visits from the LIEUTENANT of the DAMN Hood because you are an overbearing control freak!” My dad questioned, “How do you know he’s the Lieutenant?” I said, “Because my Beta has been to the Shroud. Matt, is that or is it not Lieutenant Isaiah you told me about?” Matt answered, “That was him.”
Awesome. Wonderful. Fabulous. Bolt huffed, “Sarcasm noted.” Good. Lexi’s brother was never going to like me. I noticed a note on my desk that hadn’t been there before. Great. Isaiah had left a note that was probably from Heath.
My dad said, “Just stay away from her, Chase. You need to find your mate. We have our Beta Male, and now we need our Luna.” I growled, “You do NOT run things around here anymore. I just fought you for the right to keep my title. Or did you miss that?”
My dad was quiet before saying, “I’ve never seen you fight like that.” I stared at him incredulously, “I never thought I would have to fight my own dad for his respect, but here we are! There will be NO MORE of you interfering in my life. What I do in my personal time is my own business. You can bite your tongue or tell your own damn mate about how annoyed you are. I, myself, don’t want to hear a single fucking word out of your mouth about Lexi Scott. Every member of our family likes her, and now she thinks you hate her.”
My dad’s jaw dropped, “Hate her? I don’t even know her! I don’t hate her; I just want you to find your mate. She’s got a, I think they call them strings. She belongs to him not you.” I couldn’t hide my growl, “I told you NOT to talk about her!” My dad looked startled.
Reagan shouted in exasperation, “Oh for Christ’s sake, Frank! Get a clue! Or buy a vowel. Jesus ever loving Christ! You have NO IDEA what you’ve done!” Cameron rubbed her arms, “Reagan….” Reagan yelled, “No, Cameron! Susie loves her! Nadine and I have made COUNTLESS batches of cookies for the woman because Susie wants Lexi to have them. When the three of us went to dinner, Lexi didn’t even care that a five-year-old had crashed our girl’s night. She was kind and included Susie. When we left, Chase’s men pulled up, and she instinctively put herself in front of your daughter to protect her. Seriously, I’m going to need you to get a damn clue and fast. Honest to god, you Alpha’s are truly lost without your Beta’s. I don’t know how you all function some days.”
My dad had excuses ready, “Look, I told her I knew she was important to all the women in my family. I know that! What she's planning with Ted for the pups is a good thing. I’m not arguing that. I’m just worried! We were all worried about Chase! Then he gets this girlfriend, and you all relax. He needs his mate. The pack needs their Luna.”
I reminded him, “A Luna who would have every reason to reject me with her next breath because I’m still married.” My dad frowned, “I heard Sophia said this would be over in February. I didn’t raise you to string a woman along until then. That’s cruel to her. She cares for you; I know she does. You’ll hurt her. I didn't mean to hurt her feelings about her family...”
I growled, “Lexi Scott is none of your concern or business. If you EVER send my men somewhere without my knowledge again; I’ll have no choice but to punish you. If you EVER cry fucking wolf about a rogue attack and disrespect the grave of my mother like that ever again I will come up with something TRULY horrible to do to you.”
Nadine gasped, “You didn’t!” My dad groaned, “I needed the girl’s guards off her. Chase would’ve known…” Nadine stood, “Enjoy sleeping outside tonight, Frank. When you become the man I love again you are welcome back in this home, but not a moment before! You forced Chase to assert his dominance to you today for the pack. You upset Lexi and she’s such a sweet soul. Susie is going to be distraught. The rumors will be all over this pack by now.”
Nadine shook her head, “Susie will think Lexi won’t want to be her friend anymore. How could you do this to our daughter? He may not be my flesh and blood, but I consider Chase my son too. How could you do this to our boy? You hurt him in so many ways. Actually, BOTH our boys, using a rogue attack as a diversion, OF ALL THINGS! The obvious answer is staring you in the face, and you’re choosing to ignore it. All because you're so hellbent on being right. You make this right with our pups before you think of darkening the door of our home. Do you hear me?”
I said, “Nadine, I do consider you my stepmother and a parental figure in my life. I love you.” Nadine choked up and came over and gave me a hug, “I’m so sorry about what he’s done. I love you too Chase, as if you were my own. You too Cameron.” I assured her, “It’s not your fault.”
My dad sounded panicked, “Nadine, you can’t mean this.” Nadine didn’t back down, “I meant every word. I’ll pack you some things. You are not welcome in my home until you make this right with our pups.” She stalked out while my dad sat in shock.
He looked at me and pleaded, “Chase, I can’t be without her.” I barely stopped myself from saying he’d tried to make me be without Lexi. I said, “You’re going to have a better shot at making things right with Susie before you have one with me. I’m sure someone will let you stay in their house.”
Isaac offered, “He can stay with us.” I said, “There you go.” My dad was crying. He blubbered, “Susie is coming with me.” I disagreed, “Like HELL she is. She’s staying here in this house that is her home with my stepmother. You made this bed dad, lie in it.”
