Chase’s voice reached into my subconscious as he shouted, “Lexi! Lexi! WAKE UP!” I shot out of bed breathing hard. Gasping for breath I looked around to get my bearings. Chase reached for me, “Lexi…”

I put my hand up and called Haley. She answered, “Lexi? Are you alright?” I gasped, “Sally, she’s still in the Hackura realm, right?” Haley answered, “Yes. My brother Benjamin texted about how amazing her and Cindy’s food is.” I whispered, “Ok…”

Haley gently asked, “Lexi?” I muttered, “A dream. It was just a dream. Noah had her, he said she should’ve accepted her wolf. That it could’ve saved her.” Haley questioned, “Sally has a wolf?” I admitted, “I don’t know.” Haley said, “The Troll won’t get his hands on Sally. We won’t let that happen.”

My voice shook, “No, we won’t. Sorry to disturb your night or god… it’s morning.” Haley laughed, “We haven't made it to bed yet. Eric and I just fell apart.” I snorted, “You damn bunny rabbit you.” Haley huffed, “Why do people keep saying that? I’m a hybrid Fairy Hackura, and he’s a wolf. I swear you people make no fucking sense.” I managed a weak laugh as we hung up.

Chase looked at me demanding to know, “What happened?” I worked through my thoughts, “I think Derrick is Sally’s second chance. I think if she doesn’t let him mark her soon after they meet Noah will get her.”

Chase told me, “I won’t let her get hurt. Even if she’s not Derrick’s, but I strongly suspect she is.” I cried, “I want her to have the time she needs.” Chase said, “Shh, Sweetheart we will handle it.” I added, “I remembered something. I think… Heath and I have more family.”

Chase pulled back. I explained, “My dad was arguing with someone. They were mad I didn’t know who they were. My mom told me family hurt cuts deeper than normal hurt. They didn't want my dad with my mom because of her ex-boyfriend. What if someone set the rest of my family up to take the fall for something? To isolate my mom and dad to murder them?” I started to cry.

Chase sounded cautious, “That’s a long time to wait. You don’t remember any family around ever?” I shook my head, “No, Heath wouldn’t either or he would’ve told me.” Chase said, “I think you should call your brother.” I nodded. A memory was trying to come through my mind. Something I was missing about last night. I shook myself. I couldn’t remember.

I called Heath, and he answered immediately, “Lexi, could your string not stay with you? Do you need me?” I whispered, “My string told me to call you. I… I remembered something about that night.” Heath sucked in a breath, “What do you remember?” I knew my voice sounded small when I asked, “Do you remember us ever having family on mom or dad's side?”

Heath immediately answered, “No, we don’t have family.” I argued, “I think we do.” Heath was quiet then eventually asked, “Why?” I told him what I remembered. Heath said, “I don’t understand. Mom never mentioned an ex-boyfriend.”

I muttered, “They didn’t mention having family. What if we have family out there?” Heath angrily replied, “Then they have a hell of a lot to explain. They should’ve come forward to help us.” I questioned, “Could they? If dad kicked them out?” Heath said, “If they were there that night, then they could come in. They could’ve taken us to wherever they were.” I sighed. He was right.

I cringed, “Do you think they killed them?” Heath replied, “No, not based on what you remembered. They were warning them about someone. Our parents didn’t listen, and they were killed.” I voiced a terrifying thought, “Then it’s someone they trusted. Dad took threats seriously.”

Heath was quiet before replying, “That’s possible, maybe even probable. Dad could have discarded the information because of the source it came from. He could’ve felt so betrayed that he didn’t believe anything they said.”

I held the phone close to me, “Heath, what if we know the person who killed them?” Heath hissed, “Then they will die slowly and painfully.” Chase squeezed my hand. I apologized, “I’m sorry I didn’t remember until now.” Heath assured me, “You have nothing to be sorry for. I’m sorry the dreams came back after what you saw today.”

I wanted to know about him, “What about you?” Heath admitted, “A minor nightmare. I’m fine.” I whispered, “Heath, I dreamed Noah killed Sally. He told her she should’ve accepted her wolf, and he could’ve saved her. I couldn’t move to help her. He slit her throat and tossed her behind the couch like she was nothing.”

Heath assured me, “Noah won’t touch Sally. I swear that to you. She has suffered enough. I failed her and I won’t do it again.” I reminded him, “Don’t forget about yourself. You’ll be on Noah’s hit list.” Heath said, “I know and I look forward to him trying.” I cried, “Please be careful.” Heath said, “You too. Stay close to your string when you can. If he doesn’t protect you, he will answer to me.”

I snorted, “You don’t know who he is so that would be hard.” Heath argued, “Nothing is too hard for me.” I looked at Chase who shrugged. Heath continued, “I will discreetly look into a possible family tree.”

I remembered he’d set a trap and asked, “Did anyone show up at the meet you set up?” Heath answered, “No.” I was disappointed and relieved, “So dad is dead?” Heath said, “Dad was never not dead. We both saw his body.” It was sad a part of me was holding out hope he was out there when I did see his body. I whispered, “Ok. Call me later ok?” Heath agreed, “You do the same.”

I hung up and laughed a kind of hysterical laugh, “Scott is a common last name.” Chase agreed, “It is.” I put my head in my hands, “James Scott. I don’t even know my mother’s maiden name. She never talked about it.” Chase said, “We can try to look into it. I can pull their marriage license or something.”

I smiled, “That’s sweet but Heath would know you were looking then.” Chase huffed, “Yeah, your brother doesn’t like me.” I frowned, “He doesn’t know you. He will love you once he meets you.” Chase didn’t look so certain.

We both hopped in the shower. We made out for a little bit, but I think he could sense I was still raw from everything. I wasn’t ready for anything else. I dressed in business casual clothes and walked outside with Chase. We kissed and parted ways.

I got in my car and drove to the office. I bumped into a man outside the building. I apologized, “I’m sorry.” He didn’t even turn around. I frowned and kept walking inside. I walked through the doorway and an alarm sounded.

Ted looked up. “Did you just...” I held up my hand, stopping him from continuing his thought. I pointed to his desk. He got out a wand. It beeped at my pocket. A small bug. The guy I’d bumped into put a bug on me. I stomped on it.

I ordered, “Get me the cameras outside the office.” Ted nodded and pulled it up. He groaned, “Oh shit…” I asked, “What?” Ted said, “That’s Frank Daniels.” I shouted, “WHAT? Chase’s dad just tried to bug me?!” Ted threw his hands in the air and tried to explain, “He is trying to figure out what’s going on with Chase. Maybe he thinks I’ll talk about it. Matt would see him if he bugged me.”

I groaned, “What do I even do? I can’t press charges against my one day to be father-in-law.” Ted shrieked, “EXCUSE ME? Did you, Lexi Scott, just TALK about marriage indirectly? I think you did. I do not think my ears deceive me.” I playfully punched him in the arm, “Shut up. What do we do about this?” Ted sighed, “I make a call.” I amended, “On speaker.” Ted sighed agreeing, “On speaker.”

Ted dialed Matt, who answered playfully, “Do you miss me already?” Ted winced, “I really do, but ummm there was a moderate problem.” Chase was growling, “WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU AREN’T WITH HER?” Matt said, “Because I know you, I know a moderate problem isn’t that Lexi is missing.” Chase yelled, “HE DID WHAT?!”

Ted answered, “No, but when she came into the office our bug alert was set off. She was bumped outside.” Matt groaned, “Dear god no.” Ted continued, “We pulled up the footage, and it was Frank. I’m guessing he bugged my partner because he thinks I’ll gab about Chase to her.” Matt agreed, “That’s what we are running with.”

We heard fumbling then Chase asked, “Did he hurt you Lexi?” He must have taken Matt’s phone from him. I assured him, “No, he just bumped into me, I’m fine.” Chase growled, “I will handle this.” I gently said, “Maybe let Matt. If you don’t want him to know about me and who I am to you.”

Matt said, “I love her Chase, I just do.” Chase angrily demanded, “Get me some damn ANSWERS, Matt. Derrick, let’s go. Because when we get back, we ARE discussing my father sending Lexi’s guards to a NON-EXISTENT ROGUE ATTACK.” Matt agreed, “We can work with that too. It’s perfectly acceptable for you to be pissed about that.” With that Matt hung up.

Ted sighed, “Ohhh boy! The gossip is going to be juicy tonight.” I sighed, “Poor Chase.” Kincade and Kevin walked into the office. They were stark raving mad. Ted asked, “Do you boys need a coffee?” Kevin said, “Please.” They were clearly furious. I put both hands up, “Guys, I’m fine.”
