I shrugged, “And?” Matt gave me a look, “I don’t think he will be happy.” I snarked, “Then he should’ve kept his brother at home and possibly taught him not to manhandle women. I’m just spit balling ideas here.”
Matt pointed out, “True, but you can’t say it was your mate he manhandled.” I had already thought of that, “I will say it was Cameron’s.” He sighed and handed me the Alpha’s number. It was the Black Path Pack. I couldn’t say I was surprised. No one liked them.
I dialed, then he answered on the second ring, “Alpha Davis.” I asked, “Which one?” The Alpha laughed, “I haven’t handed my title over to my son yet. Who is this?” I said, “Alpha Thomas Davis, this is Alpha Chase.”
Alpha Davis questioned, “Yes, can I help you with something?” I explained, “A member of your pack attacked my brother’s mate in the club I own. The woman warned him herself to back off, but he didn’t.” Alpha Davis sighed, “I assume this member is no more then.” I answered, “He’s not, I killed him.”
Alpha Davis asked, “Who?” I looked at the paper Matt handed me before answering, “Travis McCann.” The Alpha choked on something. He sounded stunned, “You… you killed my Gamma’s youngest brother?” I replied, “I treated him as I would anyone who did what he did. His rank didn’t factor into the equation. You should tell your pack members messing with an Alpha’s mate is a deadly offense. My pack members know that.”
Alpha Davis was quiet, “I don’t think his brother will take that kindly. He’d hoped to hand his title over to his brother’s future son. His brother hadn’t met his mate yet though. My Gamma and his mate have been unable to have a pup of their own.”
Matt slid a paper over. I was now confused. I replied, “His sister has a pup.” Alpha Davis sighed, “She does. A boy. Booker McCann.” I asked, “Could her mate help? He could step in as Gamma while his son is trained if yours is grieving the loss of his brother.”
Alpha Davis huffed, “Her mate died after he marked her. She was around other werewolves when she went into heat. The man died recently so I suppose her pup is a suitable candidate as his father will claim no rights. My Gamma is not a forgiving man, Alpha Chase.”
I growled, “Then he should’ve taught his brother how to behave in others territory. I hear the threat you're implying. If your Gamma comes for me or mine, he will join his brother in the ground. I will NOT take retaliation lying down.” Alpha Davis sounded tired when he said, “Very well, Alpha Chase. Hopefully, next time we speak it will be on better terms.” I hung up the phone. I didn’t want to speak to him ever again.
I opened my email and smiled as the first thing there was Isabella’s list of candidates for guards. I told Matt, “I was thinking next we talk about two guards for Ted.” Matt nodded, “Agreed.” I asked, “What about Mark and Joanie?” Matt thought about it, “Joanie and Mark are strong warriors. I agree.” I instructed, “Link them to come to my office. Now for Sally…”
Derrick went straight as a board. I asked, “Derrick?” Derrick looked at me, “I don’t know, Chase. My wolf is restless for some reason.” I frowned, “Alright….” I looked at Matt who just shrugged. Matt started laughing.
Now I looked at Derrick who shrugged. Everyone was shrugging. Matt explained, “Ted is asking me if Lexi gave you the best sex of your life, so you decided to have her guarded.” I snorted, “Not completely wrong, but it’s not why she’s being guarded. For Sally I was thinking Hector and Alto.” Derrick growled, “No!”
Both Matt and I looked at him in surprise. His eyes were pitch black. His wolf, Rocket, said, “Willow and Opal.” He closed his eyes, and they turned back to blue. Matt asked, “Uhh what the hell, Derrick?” Derrick answered, “I don’t know, Rocket just took over. I don’t know what’s going on.”
I broke the awkward silence, “Ookkkk. Let’s just run with it. Willow and Opal are good choices too.” Matt was staring at Derrick perplexed. Matt added, “Sally seems like a sweet little thing. Male shadows might make her uncomfortable. She is Hood though, so she might have moniker and know how to slip them.” Derrick growled. What the hell? I ordered, “DERRICK! Go for a run towards the border with Sophia. Figure out how to get Gamma Wallace to me.” I used my Alpha command. He dragged his feet as if they were encased in cement.
After he left Matt asked, “What on god’s green earth is wrong with him?” I frowned, “I have no idea.” Matt said, “Moving on from whatever the fuck just happened, I have linked all the warriors we chose. They are on their way. What is this about Former Gamma Wallace?”
I explained, “Someone is going to pay. Sophia is scared and Lexi is secret because of him. I tortured myself being away from her because of him. He’s fucking dead. Derrick is figuring out how to get him away from Sophia’s territory.”
Matt pointed out, “You could ask her.” I replied, “She could say no.” Matt pieced it together, “So, we are going with better to ask for forgiveness than ask permission?” I grumbled, “We are going with she won’t sign the annulment papers, so my wife’s prisoners are mine as well.” Matt clapped, “OHHHH BURN! I like it. That will also work. That’s actually flawless. I’m beginning to feel superfluous to you.”
I snorted, “I need you and we both know it.” Matt smiled, “You do. Lord knows how many wars I’ve stopped from breaking out. You know, Gamma McCann is going to come after us.” I nodded, “I do. When he does he’ll die, and his sister's son can take over as the Gamma.”
Matt rubbed his temples, “Now I want to know who that pup’s dad is.” I shrugged, “Who knows? Could’ve been a rogue, could’ve gone rogue, someone who scents out females’ heats, or someone passing by who couldn’t resist. It could’ve been a host of other people. I could give a shit less.”
Matt handed me a piece of paper. He glared at me, “Later you will tell me why I wasn’t informed YOU GOT SHOT WITH A TRANQUILIZER! These are things you tell your Beta. Also, I noticed you glossed over Ted mentioning you BANGING Lexi. I already knew you see because I read Kevin and Kincade’s report.”
I took it and quickly skimmed it. The demon who’d shot the tranquilizer was killed. No one made it out alive. I looked up, “Lexi brought me around quickly. I was only down for a few minutes.” Matt said, “Don’t worry I have sense BERATED Kevin and Kincade in our fairy charmed office. They will be letting me know these things from now on. It won’t happen again.”
I changed the subject, “Speaking of you were in the Shroud yesterday. Where is it?” Matt smirked, “I was blindfolded.” I laughed outright, “But you know where it is because you know this area.” Matt said, “I do know this area like the back of my hand. It’s in Alpha Sophia’s territory. We are BOTH very lucky. I am lucky because when Ted and Lexi set up their event planning business; it was the first time Ted came out of the Shroud.”
He cringed, “My wolf would’ve been LOSING it for three years if we could feel them in the Shroud. YOU are DAMN lucky Lexi has traveled a lot ever since she turned eighteen. She tends to be gone or fairy popped in and out of the area. Or in her fairy charmed home that protects her presence, otherwise Bolt would’ve been KILLING you.”
I shivered, “You’re right. Too bad we weren’t in Europe at the same time.” Matt shook his head, “It is a very good thing you weren’t in Europe at the same time. Because you were pissed off every day about Sophia not signing the papers. If you’d met her, I’d have been sent copious texts, emails, and probably smoke signals about your hatred for her.” I had to agree, “That is true.”
Willow and Opal arrived first. Opal was Reagan and Derrick’s younger sister. She asked, “Chase? You asked us to your office.” I said, “There’s a caterer who works with our Beta Male. He and his business partner are worried about her safety. You two are going to discreetly guard her while she’s here. Our allies will allow you in their territories as well if she ventures that way. Be on the lookout for her mate.” Both gasped.
Opal questioned, “We are worried about her mate?” I nodded, “He’s obsessed with someone else. Our Beta Male and his partner are worried enough she’s been put in self-defense.” Both girls’ nodded. Mark and Joanie knocked on the door and I motioned for them to come in.
I explained, “Your assignments will overlap so you might as well hear this. Mark and Joanie, you will be our Beta Male’s shadows. An office across from his will be provided for you both. Opal and Willow are guarding the caterer that works with them. You will also see Kevin and Kincade guarding our Beta Male’s partner. Her name is Lexi Scott. Nothing will happen to any of these people. Are we clear?”
They all seemed stunned Kincade was guarding anyone. Joanie, Opal, and Willow looked suspicious. Mark simply raised an eyebrow. I ignored it all. Matt asked, “Joanie, would you stay back a moment?” Mark, Opal, and Willow filed out.
I stood but Matt linked me, “Please stay.” Ok then. Mark turned, “I’ll wait for you outside, Joanie. Once you’re done, we can head out to guard Beta Male Ted.” Joanie nodded and turned to Matt. He closed the door shut and turned to Joanie, “If you’re interested in having a pup with me through insemination; I’d like you to get to know Ted better. Obviously, he and I will decide together, but you’re my top choice.”
Joanie smiled admitting, “I am interested. You know my mate, Ashton, died in a rogue attack before he could mark me. After this much time, I don’t think my second chance is out there. To be honest, when I heard you were gay; I thought maybe this was the Goddess’s path for me. We always got along as friends, you knew Ashton, and it all just seemed ideal.”
