I looked at where Lexi had disappeared. I whispered, “It feels like it was. I should’ve been more like Alpha Eric and told her to buck up and take the role because it was hers.” Cameron rolled his eyes, “Which is why she didn’t ask him. You guys discussed it at length the day she came to you about it. You didn’t blindly agree to this. She just backed out on her end. Dad thought the timing was shady on her part. She waited until he was out of town. You never planned to stay married.”

I pulled at my hair, “I didn’t think about Lexi, or what this would do to her.” Cameron reasoned, “You always had a plan to end this though. You should just explain it all to her.” I nodded, “I know. I plan to lay it all out for her. Starting with it’s not romantic and was supposed to be done with. It’s not real. Lexi is real, she’s everything.”

Cameron clapped a hand on my back, “I know what the mate pull is and how it feels. You’re stronger than any Alpha I know to resist going to her. Alpha Eric had Haley in his castle within minutes of meeting her. One of their pack members told me he never had any intention of letting her leave the grounds.” I could see that.

He chuckled, “I CHASED Reagan through the woods when I knew she was coming back. I even knew where she would come back to. I couldn’t resist it the pull, her smell, any of it. Alpha Jackson was leading Molly back to her cottage the second he smelled her. He didn’t even link dad to say he was crossing the border with us. He just came over and took her. She moved THAT day. You’re not the bad guy here.”

I turned to him, “What if I’m the bad guy to Lexi? She’s got this asshole ex who clearly hurt her. Here I am, her forever, the person made for her, and I’m a married man.” Cameron encouraged me, “Give her some credit, she seems like a levelheaded person. Just talk to her.”

I sighed, “I desperately want to talk to her, but not until this is resolved.” We sat in silence for several hours before Cameron was satisfied that I was fine. He nudged me, “I’m going to face the music with my mate.” I nodded, “Thank you, brother.” He shoved me, “I’ll always be here for you.” I admitted, “I miss you.” He turned, “I miss you too, every damn day.” He shifted and took off.

I shifted back into Bolt and moved one hundred yards away. I still had a view of where Lexi had disappeared, but I hoped she wouldn’t be able to smell me from this far away. I didn’t want to upset her. Bolt huffed, “If she came and found us, then that’s fine, right?” I told him, “I can’t stay away if she finds me so yes.” That made him happy.

Matt linked me, “My worrying mate is on the phone with yours. I told him she was fine, but he couldn’t sleep until she confirmed it herself.” I groaned, “What time is it?” Matt answered, “It’s four in the morning.” I sleepily replied, “Alright.”

Matt told me, “I want you to call a meeting with my family. I even want Molly and Jackson there too.” I was surprised, “You want me at your coming out family meeting?” Matt huffed, “I know I should do it alone, but I need you there.” I agreed, “Not a problem. You’re my best friend, of course I’ll be there. When?” Matt replied, “Today, lunch time.” I assured him, “Consider it done.”

Matt sounded relieved, “Thanks. I really appreciate it.” I promised, “Anything you need, I’m here for you.” Matt admitted, “I feel like a teenager. I’m terrified to disappoint my parents.” I wasn’t as worried, “I don’t think they will be disappointed.”

Matt changed the subject, “Apparently your mate is a smartie pants. She disconnected her phone and activated a burner phone. Ted said only he and Haley have the number to said burner phone. She paid in cash for it in Florida. I don’t know what they are or what they do, but she’s damn good at it.”

I sighed, “Of course she is.” Matt asked, “So she yelled at you last night?” I cringed, “I thought I was far back enough that she couldn’t smell me. I have adjusted the distance.” Matt laughed, “She thinks she’s paranoid.” I winced, “I didn’t mean for her to feel that way. Why didn’t they just explain Henrick is dead to their people? Did Ted tell you?” Matt informed me, “They are talking about it right now, I’ll ask.”

After several moments Matt warned, “You are not going to like this.” I grumbled, “Of course not. What have I liked about this entire damn thing?” Matt sighed, “Apparently if their people knew Henrick had come after them; they’d lock them away until they could plug whatever leak is going on. I have a plan though.”

I was relieved, “Good. I need a plan.” Matt instructed, “I investigated Henrick after we killed him. He and his people were staying in Red Run. Call Alpha Kyle and ask him to put out the word he killed him. Before you ask how to get around telling him too much, tell him it’s to protect my mate.” That was a great plan. I replied, “Calling Red Run.” Matt was surprised, “Right now?” I muttered, “I’m up. He can be up. I’m grumpy.” Matt laughed.

I shifted and grabbed my phone and dialed. To my surprise the phone was answered, “Alpha Nick speaking.” I greeted, “It’s Alpha Chase, I’m sorry to wake you.” Alpha Nick interrupted, “You didn’t. We had a rogue issue. They woke me up because they are inconsiderate jerks. What can I do for you Alpha Chase?”

I cleared my throat, “You had a man Henrick staying in your area from London.” Alpha Kyle answered, “Yes, he came in with six other people.” I cut to the chase, “They attacked my Beta’s mate and we killed them all.” Alpha Kyle chuckled, “Alright. I wasn’t aware Beta Matt found his mate. I’m going to have to give Ben shit about that.” I admitted, “He hasn’t announced it yet. I need you to circulate that you had a meeting with Henrick where he crossed you, and you had to kill him.”

Alpha Kyle sounded amused, “You don’t even have a fairy, and you’re interesting. Why do you need that circulated?” I sighed, “We do not yet know what supernatural being my Beta’s mate is, but the supernatural group want to put his mate on lockdown because Henrick is in town. Apparently if they find out his mate was actually attacked, they will lock said mate down until their leak is resolved. My Beta is beside himself. We would obviously go to war should his mate be taken. I’d like to avoid a war and conflict with them, particularly considering I have no clue who they are.”

Alpha Kyle confirmed, “I’ll have Ben circulate the word right away. We just ended the fairy war. We need at least a year in between wars.” I agreed, “That would be a nice rule.” Alpha Kyle chuckled, “Particularly if we don’t know who we are fighting. It sounds problematic.” We both laughed and I hung up.

I linked Matt, “Done.” Matt happily replied, “I have NEWS for you, my friend.” I sighed, “What now?” Matt snorted, “Your mate doesn’t want to meet you because she’s dreaming about you and Bolt. She has been ever since she saw you the night we killed Henrick.” I replied, “I am both hurt and happy by that statement.”

Matt snorted, “Prepare to only be happy. She said if she spent time with you, she just knows you’d own her heart. Apparently the ex, named Noah, messed her up good. She knows you, mind you not Chase you the nameless mate you god this is confusing, has a situation in your life. She doesn’t know what it is. She doesn’t want to meet you, Chase, because her mate, again you, could pop up at any moment. She doesn’t think spending time with you, Chase, would be fair to him, you. I am admirably holding in my laughter. I just want that on the record. She doesn’t want to meet you because of her mate. Which is actually you. I can’t man. This shit is hilarious.”

I dryly replied, “I’m laughing, really hard.” Matt retorted, “I can tell. She knows Haley is trying to fix your situation, and….” He trailed off then said, “Uh oh.” I sat up on alert asking, “What? What happened? Did Ted’s people track you to Alpha Eric’s territory?”

Matt cautiously replied, “No, Lexi just let it slip that her ex lied to her about something. Let me get some details. Ted is already red faced angry.” I gritted my teeth, “Hurry up.” After a minute Matt informed me, “Lexi knows that I’m Ted’s mate now, and you will DEFINITELY not like this.” I growled, “I long for the day you will give me news I like. Lately you’ve been a downer.”

Matt replied, “I am TRYING not to laugh, and you are not helping.” I asked, “What won’t I like? You bearer of all good news you.” Matt repeated, “You are not helping with the not laughing part of this. When did you get so funny? Beta Dylan will be beside himself because it’s his thing. He’ll send a memo. Let’s not tell him.” I growled, “Matt, explain.”

Matt hesitated before saying, “Lexi was tricked by her ex into sleeping with him. She wanted to wait for her mate, but he lied to her. The day before her birthday he told her he was her mate, and he’d felt pulled to her since he was eighteen.”

I questioned, “Pulled? So, we’ve narrowed down what they are. That’s why she turns towards me and begins to come towards me. She’s being pulled.” Matt shouted, “WHAT ARE THEY? I have no clue. How do you know, and I don’t? Is this a Europe thing? Damn it! I knew should’ve gone with you. This is what I get for doubting myself.”

I snorted, “Yes, it’s something I learned in Europe. They could be Angels, Hood, or Demons.” Matt snickered, “If our mates are literal angels the Moon Goddess is mocking us.” I teased, “Let’s be honest, they are probably demons.” Matt quipped, “I do hope they have literal fire hands then.”

I addressed my mate’s ex issue, “So, the dead piece of shit named Noah tricked her into having sex; by not abiding her wishes to save herself for well me.” Matt confirmed, “Yes, he did trick her. Lexi then decided to keep having sex with other people to see if sex was really bad, or just bad with him.”

I growled, “He didn’t even make it good for her? ASSHOLE! Was he a virgin too?” Matt answered, “Not according to my TeleTed.” I snarled, “I hate this guy. We will now just refer to him as the dead motherfucker. Because if I EVER see him, he’s dead. I don’t like the thought of her with other guys, but I’m not a virgin either. I can’t believe he disrespected her like that. No wonder she doesn’t trust people.”

Matt continued, “The story is not over.” I growled, “What else did he do?” Matt answered, “At whatever ceremony they have, he started to walk towards her as if she was pulling him. Evidently, at the last second, he smirked at her and turned away to his real mate.”

I was speechless. After several minutes I asked, “Why would he do that? His mate had to see that.” Matt admitted, “She did. She also knows what happened the night before said ceremony. One of the girls had gone to talk to Lexi and heard the things happening. She told everyone before Lexi arrived that Noah and Lexi were officially mates. It seems Lexi has a Luna role type thing going on in their whatever the hell they are group.”
