We all stiffened the moment he said someone was out to get Lexi. I linked Matt, “If I talk, I’m going to growl.” Matt rubbed Ted’s shoulders questioning, “What do you mean someone is out to get her, babe?”
Ted answered, “First, she was on a mission with a shit alias, and it almost got her beat to hell.” I couldn’t stop my growl. Ted gave me a thumbs up, “Right on, man. I was pissed too. Lex has never sent out her SOS we were all a mess. Even her piece of shit ex was worried, it was that bad. Her brother called in Haley.”
Cameron linked, “Her brother is insane. Alpha Eric will tear him to pieces if they meet.” Matt linked, “I love Haley in a platonic way, but that was an interesting choice by the brother. Given ya know, the angry Hackura and Alpha Eric factors.” I did know that.
I understood her brother though. If she sent and SOS, I’d want Haley popping into the rescue. The woman rescued herself from vampires. That’s impressive for anyone, let alone a partial fairy who was being snacked on nightly.
Ted continued, “Haley got emotional over seeing Lex down. She panicked, which her brothers did not appreciate. She shielded Lex and took the beating for her. The future King of the Hackura paid our leader a visit. He has a black eye now.” Again, with a sister, and the mate of the girl in question, I’d have done the same and taken the punch happily.
Matt linked me, “Well, at least you know those guys are dead. Alpha Eric would’ve killed them all for touching his mate.” Ted somehow had more to say, “Once Haley was assured Lex was just drugged and not in need of immediately healing; she unleashed her holy terror on them. My girl said it was something. Haley can take people’s air and make them choke to death, slowly suffocating them.”
I linked Cameron, “She can what now?” Cameron admitted, “Ok, I thought some of my new pack members were exaggerating their stories. You know how those can go post battle. Evidently, I owe a few people an apology. Holy shit!’
Matt linked, “Ok, I NEED the application to be her best friend. You guys can be co-best friends with me since she likes you now. See, we both have ins because your mate is her friend, which means my mate is her friend. The universe has smiled on us, Chase. We are the winners.” Except on paper, I was married.
Ted’s tale went on, “Haley is lethal with a sword too. I’ve watched her, she can be a little scary. She’s like this cute little kitten, then she flips a switch. Such a tiny little thing, but don’t cross her man. Anyway, now a past mark who lives in freaking London shows up out of the blue. Someone’s after my girl.” He told a long ass story, but he was right.
Ted was staring longingly at my Beta, “Matt, I really want to spend the night with you, but I need to make sure Lex is safe. She’s lethal herself, but I worry.” Matt was about to start pouting. I asked, “Do you fight like Lexi does?” Ted flushed admitting, “No, but I can shoot a gun.”
I informed him, “I have two men on the front of the hotel. They will make sure she is safe. Go spend time with Matt.” Ted squealed, “Really?” I managed not to cover my ears when I nodded. That was a very high pitch.
Ted clapped, “You’re good friends with the Alpha, Matt? That’s hot. No one’s ever ripped a man to shreds for me before. Lex has killed people to protect me in the past. She totally would’ve had that guy, but no one has ever ripped anyone apart to protect me.” Ted clearly had not picked up that Matt was the Beta yet.
Matt said, “I’ll always protect you, Ted, you’re mine. Let me just say, you look damn hot as Stitch.” Ted looked down, “I told Lex to get me something fabulous from her day trip. She didn’t disappoint.” Matt leaned down and whispered in his ear, “It will look even better on the floor.”
Ted shivered, “Race you to my place. Hope you can keep up wolfie of mine.” Matt snorted, “I’m a werewolf, I can keep up.” Ted smirked, “Mmm, maybe. I’m really fast.” He took off running. Matt shifted a second later and followed him at a dead run.
Cameron commented, “He is really fast.” I agreed, “Yes, he is but Lexi is faster.” Cameron asked, “What are they? Are mutants real? Like the X-Men mutants? Can we even discount that? We are freaking werewolves. Why couldn’t there be X-Men?” I rubbed my head, “Who knows?”
Cameron questioned, “How long have you known about Matt?” I confessed, “Not long. I found him the other day upset because he felt his mate was nearby. He thought it was a woman, and he didn’t want to find her. He thought I’d strip him of his title.”
Cameron thought about it before saying, “Some would expect that of you. We’d be disappointed in you, and I’d have a knock down drag out fight with you if you considered it. I’d imagine you have plans for that.”
I shrugged, “Even if the Goddess hadn’t given him a male mate, I’d have kicked their sorry asses out. I have no room for bigotry in my pack. Matt is an excellent Beta, and they can still have pups. They have options. Besides, now if anyone wants to say shit against the Moon Goddess, I’d imagine she’d strike them down herself.” Cameron laughed, “That’s true. Reagan knows something is up by the way.”
Kincade linked me, “The Luna shook us again, but we think we are nailing down where she truly stays.” I growled, “FOR FUCKS SAKE!” Cameron asked, “What? You can’t be that surprised Reagan knows something is up. Pretty much everyone does.”
I turned to him incredulously yelling, “Someone in their own unknown supernatural group is after my mate. Siccing old flames on her, who I had to let my Beta kill because he was going to go on a killing spree if I didn’t, and she’s getting her alias leaked on a mission. Someone is after her. I can’t even meet her or be with her to help protect her. Oh, and let’s not forget her partner and apparent good friend is my Beta’s mate. My men can’t stay on her as shadows if she doesn’t want them. She’s VERY good at losing my BEST fucking warriors.”
Cameron consoled me, “I know where she will be tomorrow night.” I frowned, “Your party is Sunday.” Cameron nodded, “Yes, it is but Reagan hit it off with Lexi. They are going to dinner at your restaurant tomorrow night.” Relief filled me, “That does help. That’s Good.”
Cameron groaned. I asked, “What now?” He cringed, “Lexi called Reagan. She knows one of us helped them. She’s linking me asking about what’s going on.” I reminded him, “I have a patrol that runs this border frequently.” Cameron nodded, “So do we. I’ll just have to tell her it was you not me that saved Lexi.” I smiled, “I wish you well brother.” We parted ways.
I fell into my bed. I dreamed of the fight, but this time Lexi fought with us. Bolt and I were in awe of her. She was good. Bolt got to play with her in our dream. She rode on our back, and right when we were about to shift so she could see me, my alarm went off, and I couldn’t help but curse its timing.
Bolt snickered, “It wasn’t real.” I sighed, “Apparently, I only get to spend time with her in our dreams. I didn’t even to get to see here there as my human self.” Bolt quietly said, “I’m sorry, Chase.” I assured him, “It’s nothing for you to be sorry about.”
I found Derrick pacing in my office when I went downstairs. I questioned him, “Derrick?” Derrick whirled, “I can’t find Matt. He’s not in his room in the pack house, and he’s not answering my links.” I put my hands up, “Matt is fine. I know where he is.” Derrick sighed, “Couldn’t you two give a Gamma a hint? I’ve been pacing for an hour and a half wondering whether or not to come get you.”
I instructed, “Go ahead and takes Matt’s training class this morning.” Derrick agreed, “Sure. As long as he’s fine.” I promised, “Matt is more than fine.” Derrick sighed in relief, “Good.” He left to go train.
My office line rang, and I answered, “This is Alpha Chase.” Cameron said, “I know the sound of my brother’s voice. You don’t have tell me who I’m talking to.” I laughed, “I didn’t know it was you.” Cameron joked, “There’s this wonderful invention called Caller I.D. check it before you pick up your phone, big brother. The world is full of wonders.”
I asked, “Can I help you? Or did you call to give me shit?” Cameron smugly replied, “It seems your Lexi thinks I helped her last night. I have flowers and a card thanking me for my help. I like this woman. I’ve never gotten flowers or a card for saving someone. You come to mind. I’ve saved you a few times, no card, no flowers, you need to meet this girl. She’ll be good for you. She even had it rush delivered.” I growled, “My pack saved her, not yours.”
Matt came skipping into my office. I raised an eyebrow ending the conversation, “I’m going to have to call you back my Beta is skipping.” Cameron barked out a laugh before I hung up. I joked, “So, have a good night did you?”
Matt smirked, “I mated and marked my mate. I’m having a great day.” I asked, “Is he going to mark you?” Matt happily answered, “Yes, he had a bit of panic attack sort of freak out when I told him I was your Beta.” I frowned, “Why?”
