Derrick whistled, “Yeesh.” My dad observed, “He really doesn't like you.” I groaned, “I can't even blame him. If Susie’s mate was married, I wouldn’t give a fuck about his reason. I’d beat his ass. Anyway. What did you come in here for dad?”
My dad explained, “I’m taking a day trip on Friday, and just wanted you to know.” I nodded, “Alright. Are you going to share where?” He smiled, “Not right now. I’ll leave in the morning and be back before Susie goes to bed.” I asked, “Can I get a hint?” My dad told me, “I’m going to follow up with someone to see if they have any idea where someone ended up. I’ve turned up nothing else, so I thought…. Why not give this a try?” I admitted, “I have no idea what that means. Have fun with your secret project dad.” My dad laughed and left.
Matt said, “I asked Ted about Lexi and the Black Arrow.” I sat up, “And?” Matt winced, “He said they are thick as thieves, two peas in a pod.” I groaned, “Great. I can’t have the Black Arrow running around our damn territory.”
Matt pointed out, “I don’t think you can stop it. You can't tell Lexi why you don’t want her here, and the Black Arrow did save your dad. You dad said that something was up with her when she saw him. I think she was scared Lexi’s mate had been hurt on their watch. I think she’s close enough to her that Lexi told her about you.”
Now, I wanted to throw things. I pinched the bridge of my nose, “Lexi did hear a black wolf was down in our territory. She was scared it was me.” Matt encouraged me, “Just tell Lexi about the dreams.” I scoffed, “Oh yeah that will go well. I’ll just say hey, you know your really good friend, The Black Arrow? I’m having dreams where we talk and sometimes make out and stuff.” Derrick laughed. Matt frowned, “Maybe don’t phrase it that way.” I complained, “You two are no help.”
That night I had another dream. I groaned. “Leave me alone!” The Black Arrow taunted me, “You don’t want me to leave you alone though.” I disagreed, “I REALLY do.” The Black Arrow laughed, “No, you don’t.”
I heard Lexi say, “Don’t tease him.” I turned, “Lexi? This isn’t what it looks like.” Both girls sat by each other. Lexi smirked, “Is that so?” The Black Arrow teased, “Don’t they always say that?” I asked, “Are you two messing with me?”
Lexi climbed into my lap, “Why would we do that?” The Black Arrow got behind me and bit my ear, “Yeah, why would we do that, Chase? Think about it.” I was so hard. I gritted my teeth, “Ok, this is getting weird.” Lexi kissed me then yanked my shirt over my head.
The Black Arrow turned my head and kissed me too. I kissed her back and felt tingles on my arms. I stood holding Lexi to me. I ordered, “Just leave us ALONE! I want Lexi! Just Lexi.” The Black Arrow laughed, “I’m afraid I can’t do that. That would be impossible.”
I woke up sweating. What the actual fuck?! I got up and splashed water on my face. I got back in bed and watched Lexi sleep. Maybe I should let Heath beat the shit out of me. Not only was I married, but I was also fantasizing about another woman. Bolt said, “Now, now. You are fantasizing about us with mate and another woman. Not to be a broken record, but mark mate FOR THE LOVE OF THE GODDESS!” I sighed, “I’ll think about it.” Bolt huffed, “Hallelujah.”
The rest of the week flew by. My dad left before I’d gotten home from Lexi’s on Friday morning. Matt pleaded with me, “PLEASE tell Derrick to go run or something. He’s fretting over the return of Sally Quaid, and I can’t take it anymore!” I laughed and went in search of my Gamma.
I found Derrick in my office. Which had never been cleaner. I asked, “Derrick?” Derrick turned around, “I filed everything.” Matt muttered, “I have a system.” Derrick reminded him, “That I know.” I asked, “Did you vacuum and dust in here?” Derrick answered, “I... well... maybe.”
I laughed, “Derrick, go for a run.” Derrick admitted, “I did. I’ve been for two runs today.” Matt groaned. I thought quickly on my feet. I smiled when my plan formed. I said, “Well, let’s surprise Ted and Lexi for lunch today. Why don’t you go coordinate the food, Derrick?”
Matt questioned, “How will that help him?” I said, “Sally will probably be brought to her home first. Her first stop will be to see Ted and Lexi.” Derrick actually clapped, “That’s brilliant!” He left. Matt said, “If Haley pops Sally to Lexi and Ted and see you with her… What then?”
I shrugged, “Then the chips have landed. The Moon Goddess will have spoken, and I’ll mark Lexi.” Matt asked, “Oh really? That’s a one eighty. Did you by chance have more BA dreams?” I groaned, “This time it was the Black Arrow and Lexi. Since when do you call her BA?”
Matt waved his hand, “Ted ALWAYS calls her BA it slips out of my mouth. So, now you’re dreaming about them both?” I nodded, “Yes, and they seem cool with it. They tease me.” Matt laughed, “Of course they do it’s your subconscious.” Did he have to be rational?
Derrick came back, “Lunch is planned.” I nodded. We all got to work. When lunch rolled around, we packed up what the kitchen had made and got in a car. Matt smiled and rubbed his hands together. I asked, “Is Ted excited?” Matt said, “I want to surprise him.”
We walked into their building, and handed lunch to Kevin, Kincade, Mark, and Joanie. They smiled and we all walked into the office. Ted looked up and paled. He greeted us, “Umm hi guys.” I announced, “I’m going to grab Lexi.”
Ted blurred in front of her office door, “Ummm she’s very busy.” I frowned, “I brought her lunch.” Ted said, “That’s so sweet. Aren’t you a sweet Alpha male? Lexi is busy though. I’ll give it to her. No time to chat! Bye now!”
My eyes narrowed, “Lexi said you didn’t have a big event this week.” Ted shrugged, “Not this week, no. Lots of little things. Now, it’s time for the wolves to go now.” Matt growled, “Ted, I know you’re lying. I can feel it.” Ted shot him a look. I was not getting a good feeling.
I snarled, “Where is Lexi?” I pushed past Ted and opened the door. Lexi’s scent was in here, but she wasn’t anywhere to be found. I whirled demanding answers, “Ted? Where is she?” Ted sighed, “I don’t know. She said she had something to do, and that she’d back tonight.” I growled, “Is this a Hood mission?” Ted admitted, “I really don’t know. She said it was a secret.”
Kevin growled, “How did we not know she left?” Ted rolled his eyes, “Umm you all do know we are freaky fast right? Lexi is faster than the majority of us.” Kevin and Kincade growled. I ordered, “Don’t lie to me ever again, Ted.”
Ted replied, “I stand with my girl, always Alpha.” I yelled, “I am TRYING to protect her!” Ted replied, “She can take care of herself. She’s independent and you can’t pin her down.” I argued, “I’m not TRYING to pin her down. I just want to know what’s going on!” Ted frowned, “I can’t tell you because I honestly don’t know.” I took a deep breath. “Let’s eat lunch anyway.” We ate in silence.
The hours ticked by, and I paced. Lexi’s phone was off, going directly to voicemail. Finally, Ted broke the silence, “If she is on a mission, she can’t answer her phone.” I growled and kept pacing.
Eventually I sat down running my hands through my hair. Matt offered, “I’m sure she’s fine.” I growled, “If she wasn’t, I’d never know because I can’t fucking mark her!” No one had anything to say after that. Ted was wringing his hands, and clearly felt guilty we’d found out Lexi was gone. He was covering for her, which meant she’d asked him to. She didn’t even tell me she was leaving. That was odd. She’d been getting pretty good at letting me know about things.
It was almost five when Lexi flashed into the room. She squeaked in surprise seeing all of us waiting. Seeing that she was fine made my anger fired on all cylinders. She knew that she had people after her. She couldn’t just shake us, and not let us know she was doing something. I tried to take a calming breath, but it didn’t work.
Bolt howled in pain when she gulped. I didn’t mean to scare her. We all turned when we heard my dad. My jaw hit the ground. I asked, “Dad?” My dad said, “Yes, son. Now if you’ll excuse me. Lexi and I need to chat.” I growled, “You’ve been with her all damn day!” My dad nodded, “Most of the day. She followed along after me. I have an appointment with her and everything.” Ted chimed in, “He does.”
I growled and stormed out of the room. Matt stepped out last and shut the door. I yelled, “WHAT THE HELL?!” Matt winced, “They can probably hear you.” Ted disagreed, “No they can’t. You can’t hear in or outside of the office.”
I nodded to him, “Thank you, Ted. I repeat. WHAT THE HELL?” Matt tapped his chin, “I’d say your birthday, but that’s not until the spring. Maybe it’s a long planning process. She is a party planner.” I huffed and started pacing again. Ted sighed. Matt groaned, “Oh good, we’ve started pacing again.”
After thirty minutes Lexi and my dad stepped out of her office. I yelled, “What is going on?” My dad said, “Bonding time with my future daughter in law. You know I wouldn’t let anything happen to her.” I ordered her, “Don’t shake Kevin and Kincade.” Lexi sighed, “I’m sorry about that.” Kincade said, “At least a heads up would’ve been nice.” Lexi quickly agreed, “I can do that.”
