Lexi explained what happened. She was surprised I was here. As if I could be at her house without her being home, shots fired, and her location as unknown! I linked Kevin and Kincade, “Go home get some sleep. I am sorry.” They replied simultaneously, “We are sorry too.” I huffed, “Witches.” I didn’t know I was crying until Lexi wiped my tears away. I was shaken.

The thought of her getting shot had my entire being recoil. Lexi invited Cameron to stay the night in her house. I linked him, “She’s got a spare room.” Matt linked me, “Ted is shocked she’s offering says she’s very protective of her space. He said that you both should be honored.” I knew that.

Cameron declined. He linked me, “I need to hold Reagan after this. It hits too close to home.” I asked him, “How did you know to come? That I needed you?” Cameron smiled, “Matt texted me.” I snorted. I waved to him then linked Matt, “Thank you for texting Cameron to come.”

Matt said, “I can’t keep you from killing people by myself when Lexi is involved. If she was missing, we’d need him to help find her anyway.” We all left. Lexi got ready for bed on autopilot. She was in a bit of shock but didn’t seem to realize it. I noticed she’d texted her brother. I was going to be talking to him. He needed to get his damn house in order and plug this damn leak. Lexi was dead on her feet.

She mumbled, “I love you, Chase. No punching my guards anymore though.” I laughed. I couldn’t promise her that. She fell asleep, down for the count. I grabbed her phone and got her brother’s number out of it. He’d already texted her back. I didn’t read the message, but he responded so that told me he was awake.

I stepped outside her bedroom door. I wasn’t going to go any further away from her than this. I knew I wasn’t going to wake her up. She was dead to the world, but I couldn’t let her leave my eyesight. I called Heath’s number from my phone.

He answered, “Hello, who is this?” I snarked, “I’m surprised you don’t have my number.” Heath asked, “And you are?” I didn’t know if Heath knew that I knew he was the Hood, but I was going to play this game as if I didn’t.

I replied, “You know very well who I am. I have a message for your leader, Heath Scott. The Hood came to see me and told me to protect Lexi. I have fucking bulletin for him.” Heath sounded amused, “Oh? What’s that?”

I growled, “Tell him to get his DAMN house in order. This damn leak has gotten on my last good nerve. If ONE more past mark shows up for Lexi, I’ll hunt the Hood down myself and punch him in the fucking face.” Heath was quiet then asked, “What happened?”

I yelled, “ASK HIM! He seems to know everything going on.” Heath said, “He’s not here at the moment so enlighten me.” I explained, “Someone named Bobby showed up. I’m sure Haley Conners has killed him by now, but he was using witches. His men spelled my men and TeleTed away from her. They had to of damaged her car. SHE WAS SHOT AT!”

I yelled at him all while watching Lexi’s chest rise and fall. Heath said, “I assume my sister is fine, or you would’ve started this call saying she was hurt. You also mentioned Haley was involved. Haley would never let my sister leave her presence unhealed.”

I acknowledge, “Lexi is fine, but in shock. This is the third past mark that’s come now. Mind you, I’ve killed all of them except this last one.” Heath asked, “So, Alpha Kyle did not kill Henrick?” I retorted, “No, but you knew that too. Didn’t you?”

Heath admitted, “I did. I knew that you killed him once I looked into Alpha Kyle saying he did.” I growled, “How about we cut the shit then? Tell your leader to a better job protecting Lexi so I can. Plug your damn leak.”

Heath huffed, “It’s Noah. He knows all the missions she’s ever had.” I snapped, “Well there’s a novel thought. Really! I mean even I knew it was Noah after the FIRST guy! KILL HIM ALREADY!” Heath yelled, “We are trying to find him.” I demanded, “Try harder.” Heath hissed, “Watch it, married man.”

I said, “Your leader can get away that, but Ted talks a lot. You won’t hurt Lexi. You’d hurt yourself first. I’m doing what I can to protect her, but I don’t have all the information.” Heath argued, “If you brought her to your side, you could protect her better.” That hurt because it was true.

I admitted, “Yes, I could and would in a heartbeat if that’s what she wanted. She doesn’t want, and I quote, to know about my ‘situation’, which means she can’t be by my side until Sophia’s petty ass gives me my annulment. I need Sophia’s stupid Gamma to tell me about her Beta’s father. Is there any chance you have that answer? Did Beta Alfred Sr. have anything to do with this coup attempt?”

Heath admitted, “I suspect he did, but I do not have proof. Which is why Sophia has no proof. I’d have given it to her if I did.” I groaned, “One damn answer holds everything up.” Heath was quiet. I pressed my luck, “Do you know anything else?” Heath snorted, “I know a lot of things.”

I gritted out, “About Sophia.” Heath replied, “I know a lot about her too. For example, I know that before he died her dad told her to keep control of their pack by any means necessary. I also find how he died awfully strange.” I stated, “He got sick.”

Heath snorted, “Yes, that’s what is strange. How many sick wolves do you know, Alpha Chase?” I opened my mouth and shut it several times. Finally, I asked, “Are you saying Sophia’s dad was murdered?” Heath was emphatic, “Yes.”

I whisper yelled, “Does she know?” Heath admitted, “I do not know. Some days I think she does, others I think she can’t.” I asked, “Do you know who did it?” Heath huffed, “I am working on it. Several of those involved have died by my hand. They caused chaos for me, and I do not like chaos. The main person behind it all, I have not managed to pin that down.”

I was reeling. To kill an Alpha was a serious offense. Wait a second. I asked, “How do you know what her father said to her before he died?” Heath replied, “I told you, I know a lot of things. I do not think her father meant to scare her into thinking she needed to hide her true self or behind a man. I think he intended for her to fight. I don’t know the exact words he used, but the general tone. I know that the man he was in the end, was not the man he’d been throughout the rest of his life.” We weren’t allowed to see him. Which now that I thought about it was odd.

Health continued, “Older members of the pack told her they wouldn’t accept her as Alpha and she panicked.” I asked, “Did you know all this then? We could’ve gone to the werewolf council if her father was murdered. That is a grave offense.”

Heath sighed, “No, I started looking into this three years ago.” I frowned. Why would he care then? If it wasn’t about the territory his Shroud was in then why did he care? I shook myself. I didn’t have time for these problems.

I said, “Whatever. The point is, stop your leak.” Heath ignored me, “Do you know why my sister needs to talk to me?” I admitted, “No, as I said, she was in shock and dead on her feet. She’s sleeping.” Heath was quiet, “Then we will find out later. I’ll do my best to keep her safe. She means the world to me, Chase Daniels. See that you don’t let my world get hurt, or you’ll deal with me. I have lost a lot in my life. I am not willing to lose anymore. Especially not her.”

I growled, “I will not lose her. Don’t even say that! SHE IS MINE!” Heath advised, “Be sure you keep her close. From what I have learned Noah will stop at nothing to get her back.” I asked, “What exactly have you learned? And dear god WHY did you not know what happened between them all these years?”

Heath answered, “I respected their privacy when I should’ve known better. Lexi had such an extreme reaction to their breakup. I should’ve realized something was wrong. I’ve been digging. I found Noah’s journals about her. He feels that she belongs to him. Something about what was always meant to be. His uncle showed him the truth. It’s the ramblings of a crazy person.”

I questioned, “Who is his uncle?” Heath sighed, “That’s the thing, he doesn’t have one. There are no records of siblings for his mother or father. Both claim to have no siblings.” I theorized, “So someone has gotten to him by pretending to be his uncle? Why would he believe them?”

Heath said, “Or one of his parents are lying. Hell, both of them for all I know right now. If so, records have been altered to align with their story. These are Hood records and they both had access to alter them.”

I questioned, “Why would they do that?” Heath said, “To protect their family. One thing I am sure of is Noah’s brother doesn’t know his uncle; should he be real. His confusion could not be faked.” I sighed, “This gets more complicated by the minute.”

Heath snorted, “You have no idea how damn complicated this is. On so many levels.” I groaned, “I don’t even have the energy to contemplate that. Pass my message along.” Heath laughed, “Consider it delivered.” Because I’d given it directly to him. I said, “Good.” I hung up the phone and climbed into bed with Lexi. “I’ll protect you, sweetheart. I promise,” I swore. I pulled her close to me and fell asleep.
