Page 30 of Enzo

The evening was beautiful.Deja always loved summer, but tonight was the best night of her life. Enzo was on one side of her, and Ven was on the other. They had dinner; the meal included lamb, something Deja had never tried before. She still wasn't sure how she felt about it, but it was edible. She couldn't find it in herself to protest because last week she had barely eaten. It seemed her males were definite carnivores.

She stopped, making Enzo and Ven turn to look at her. She shook her head and started walking again. Her males, she didn't have a right to claim them; she was just borrowing them for a while. Her easy smile slipped, and she walked ahead of them, seeing The Wolves Den.

Deja looked behind her and gave Enzo and Ven a smile and a wave before she disappeared into The Wolves Den. She needed some time to herself.

"Do you think she's okay?" Ven asked Enzo, his eyes dull with worry.

"I think she is like us. Not really sure what's going on and trying to take things one at a time."

They both nodded, agreeing, and walked into the club.

Cole gave a wave to them but caught Enzo's eye and motioned him over.

Enzo moved over to the bar, his long legs eating up the distance. With a smile to the males around him, he took a seat and ordered a drink.

"Hair of the Wolf." He waited until Cole brought the drink back.

There was alcohol, and there was what they drank. It was a nice mixture of what they found on the planet and what they distilled themselves.

Cole leaned over and slid him the drink while murmuring, "Corso is awake."

Declyn walked over and joined them at the bar. He took one look at Enzo's drink and ordered one of the same.

After Cole brought his drink, Enzo told him the news. "Corso is awake."

"Shit," Declyn said. They both nodded in agreement and tossed the drinks back.

"That's strong. Why do I always forget and drink what Enzo's drinking?" Declyn gave a half-mocking laugh.

"Considering I didn't even know what this was until Declyn introduced me to it, I'm going to ignore him."

Enzo watched as Deja came out and started pouring drinks for males that were suddenly thirsty. He might have to give her up sooner than he wanted. Corso was the Alpha of the Thalians, their rivals. He had gone to ground about ten years ago, allowing them to have a time of peace.

The Kur'ik and the Thalians had been at war for centuries, fighting to maintain the status quo of their worlds. There was no status quo to maintain on Earth, but Corso believed that hispeople would come for them and, when they did, they would grant them permanent life if they wiped out the Kur'iks. Corso was a fool.

"This is going to mean war again," Declyn said. "You know his beta will run and tell him."

"What do you want me to do? Send her away?" Enzo took his time to look at Deja, who was smiling and talking to some of their people.

"It's too late for that. Look at them; we hired Deja a few days ago, but already they love having her close. Besides, I smell her on you. You'll never be able to send her away now."

Declyn was right, but he knew better than to confirm that thought.

"So what do we do?"

"We let everyone know that we might be going to war over a human female."

"It's better than what we were fighting about before."

"Granted." Declyn stood and made his way to the opposite end of the club to have a seat with several males.

Deja kept her eye on Enzo and Declyn, wondering what they were whispering about as she poured drinks and smiled at males she was becoming used to seeing. Around midnight, the door opened and let in about fifteen males she'd never seen before. They didn't seem to want any trouble, just a drink and a minute or two of her time. By closing, she realized this was the fullest the Wolves Den had been since she started. Her feet hurt from taking drinks to customers as well as trying to cover the bar. They needed a waitress soon.

The males were still hovering around at closing time. With a shake of her head, she disappeared in the back to get her purse. She was wearing low-heeled sandals today, so there was no need to change her shoes. If she were going to be running around every night, then she'd always be in something low-heeled.

She walked out to find the club empty except for Cole.

"They're waiting outside for you," he said, giving her a smile.
