I wait patiently as we sit on the rocks for hours as Pierce reads the large book and then the smaller one. His brows furrow in frustration as he pours through the material at a fast rate.
When the sun begins to set, I decide we need a break. I lean over and kiss his cheek. "Why don't we take a pause and grab some food and you can tell me what you found?"
"Yeah, yeah." His voice is distant as he looks up from the book for the first time since we sat here. His sharp edges darken his features.
With a straight face and a rigid posture, he grabs my hand leading us to a hidden barricade, we materialize inside my bedroom.
He throws the books on the ground, they hit my hardwoods with a loud thud. The cracked yellowed pages fly out as he puts a hand through his hair.
He looks so upset. "What is it?" I ask.
His eyes wide, he takes me in for a moment then. "Damnit!" He hisses. He lets out a deep breath. "It just doesn't make any sense! None of this does. Something else is going on here."
Thirty-four
Sleepover
Amonth passes by, nearing the end of summer and the end of spending every day with Pierce. We're still not certain of anything and we're constantly on high guard. I don't know how we will tackle the obstacles while I'm in college, but hopefully we'll be okay. I lay on his chest, trying to forget the things I do not understand.
In one summer, I've fallen in love with a man... who is the Angel of Death. Stopped talking to friends out of fear for their safety. But I've also learned so much about myself, I'm strong and resilient and when faced with trials I find my way through.
My phone rings, I grunt, going to hit ignore but Pierce beats me to it.
Holding the phone in his hands he squints in the darkroom, "Why is Zack calling you?" he asks in an annoyed tone.
I shrug, "Just ignore it."
"Hello?" Great, he didn't listen. Putting the phone on speaker I hear Zack on the other end.
"I need to talk to Scarlett." Zack says.
"Scar is asleep on my chest; she will call you tomorrow." He goes to hang up, but Zack quickly says, "Wait! It's about Liv."
I grab the phone, keeping it on speaker. "What's going on?"
"Hey," he's relieved. "Can we meet up?"
I feel Pierce chuckle beside me, shaking the bed with his laughter. "I'm coming with," he informs me.
"I don't care who comes, I just need to talk to Scarlett,” he groans.
"Where?" I ask.
"Wherever."
Pierce speaks up, "Meet us at the park, in thirty."
After changing, Pierce brought us to the park. We waited patiently until Zack pulled up. Pierce is completely invisible as he lurks in the shadows for protection. We couldn't risk anything, and Pierce wanted to have the momentum of surprise by being invisible tonight in case anyone followed us.
Zack looks frantic, he runs his hands through his thick hair. "Look I don't have an easy way to say this, but I really hurt Liv tonight."
I'm confused. "What? How?"
"We were hanging out-"
I cut him off, "Hanging out?" I shake my head. "She's been on vacation."
He shakes his head, "She got in tonight, she was going to surprise you in the morning. Please don't tell her I told you, she was looking forward to it."
