She smiled. “Thanks.”
Before I could ask if she was worried about something now, Rafe returned. Alone.
Amber shooed me, and I rushed over to him. “Well? What happened? Where are Zach and Zane?”
He smiled and kissed me. “It’s nothing bad, I promise.”
Before I could press further, fireworks shot into the air. One after another, an array of colors and patterns filling the sky.
Rafe turned me so he could pull my back against his front and wrap his arms around me. Placing my hands over his arm, I leaned back and watched the display in the arms of my husband. Surrounded by my family and friends, it was hard to believe even a year ago that I’d thought I would never have this.
But I’d mended relations with my family, stopped holding back with my friends, and finally fell in love with a man who’d never hurt me intentionally.
The future might not be certain, but that was okay. With so much love in my life, I could face whatever came my way.
Epilogue
Rafe
Aunt Lori:I need more pictures! And promise me you’ll bring back as many chocolates and macarons as you can.
Abby:What about an ugly mug?
Aunt Lori:That too, of course. If such a thing exists in France.
Me:The tourist souvenir shops have some cheap, ugly stuff. Don’t worry. We’ll find one for you.
Abby:I already found a T-shirt for your boyfriend!
Aunt Lori:Fernando doesn’t need any more souvenir T-shirts. He has about fifty of them.
Me:Nope, he’s getting one. He needs to feel welcome.
Abby:Don’t try to pretend that’s the real reason, Rafe.
Me:I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Abby:This is for the rival team’s jersey Aunt Lori got you for Christmas. Now you’re out to get your own kind of friendly revenge. Friendvenge?
Me:Are you making up words now?
Abby:Of course. And it sounds better, too.
Aunt Lori:Hmm. I can’t stop you, but if you buy him more than one shirt, it’s game on, Rafe. And you’ll have to wait to see what I do next.
Me:Bring it, Aunt Lori.
Abby: This isn’t going to end well, is it?
Me:You’ll just have to wait and find out. For now, I’m taking my wife to Versailles and am going to ignore my text messages.
Aunt Lori: Noooo!!!
Abby: I’ll reach out later, when I have a chance.
