His deflated reaction was adorable – like a five-year-old boy being told, no, hewasn’tthe best baseball player who had ever lived.
Things got pretty insane a few seconds later, though, when I offered to let him borrow my gun for protection.
“Thank you,” he said, “but I need something else, too.”
“What?” I asked, figuring it would be something like a silencer.
“A block of plastic explosives,” he said. “C-4. Enough to blow up a car or kill everyone in a room.”
I stared at him in shock.
I had not been expectingTHAT.
“You’ve got to befuckingkidding me.”
“I need to pose a serious threat to force Lau to give me back my family’s money, and that’s the only thing I can think of.”
I laid my head on his chest because I couldn’t look at him.
Roberto was…
He was fuckinginsane.
But…
Was he?
Lau was the most dangerous man I knew.
A gun wasn’t going to do shit. Han or his thugs would just kill him the second the gun came out.
Maybe ithadto be that extreme…
You want to be free of Lau, right?
Maybe this is the only way to do it.
When I didn’t say anything or look at him, Roberto began to stroke my hair gently. When he spoke, I could hear the regret in his voice.
“Forget about it. I haveyouback – that’s all I want. I’ll take care of the rest somehow – ”
Fuck it.
“Alright,” I said.
He sounded shocked. “Alright, what?”
“I can help you.”
He put a finger under my chin and tilted my head up to look at him.
His eyes were loving and full of concern. “You don’t have to.”
“I know… but I will.”
“You have contacts that can get what I need?”
“Yes.”
