I walked through the door into the hallway. Onyx locked and shut the door. He jiggled the knob and tested the door to make sure it was locked, then once satisfied he gestured toward the elevator.
We walked to the elevator, and he pressed the call button.
"So you're going to teach me how to use a gun today?" I asked as we waited for the car.
He nodded. "I am. Without anything to protect you, you're vulnerable. Your ex has already gone too far. Multiple times. It's not happening again on my watch."
The door opened, and we stepped inside the elevator. I watched him press the ground floor button and the doors shut.
We stood in silence. Finally getting up the nerve to ask, I said, "Excuse me if this is too personal, but what's with your eyes?"
He glanced at me. "What do you mean?"
What? He had to know.... Shocked by his answer, I gaped at him like a fish out of water, my mouth opened and closed; words completely escaped me.
A smile broke across his face, and I knew he'd been teasing. "Contacts. Keeps life interesting."
"Asshole."
He laughed.
The door opened on the ground floor, and we walked outside. Onyx pulled his keys from his pocket and unlocked his car in the parking lot.
He put a warm hand on my lower back and guided me to the parking spot. When we arrived, Onyx opened the door of his sleek but non-flashy black Dodge and helped me into the passenger seat. I stared at him as he shut the door and rounded the car to the driver's side.
Something unusual about Onyx nagged at me, but I couldn’t figure out what it was. He'd been perfectly nice to me but something still made me squirm.
He climbed into the driver's seat and fastened his seatbelt. His eyes trailed across my body, checking for my seatbelt. When he saw I'd buckled in, he grabbed a pair of sunglasses out of a coin area under the dash and put them on. He pushed the button that started the car and backed out of the spot. Soon, he pulled out of the parking lot onto the road.
"Where are we going? Is this place across town?" I asked.
"Don't worry. We aren't going far."
He drove for a few miles then maneuvered the car across traffic into the left turn lane and waited at the light. He seemed content with silence instead of conversation.
After he turned on the blinker, he asked, "I know you moved here for school. Have you ever been here before?"
"No."
"So you need a tour guide. I'll show you some places. First, I'm about to introduce you to the best breakfast spot in town. Make note of this address."
"Is this the place that screwed up your breakfast yesterday?"
Onyx laughed. "No. I don't get to come here often. My work is the opposite way."
The green arrow appeared, and he made the turn. A few moments later he pulled into a street parking spot in front of a diner. The sign outside read "Bobbie's."
Onyx unbuckled his seatbelt, tossed his sunglasses in the cupholder, pushed the button to turn the car off, and climbed out. He didn't even look first to make sure no traffic was coming on the street.
I climbed out, too, and met him on the sidewalk beside the car. He nodded toward the front door and followed me as I walked toward it.
Chapter 6
Onyx
Wynn was adorable. After spending time with her, I could see why other demons kept human "pets" for amusement — basically well-kept friends supported financially by a demon like a pet would be. I could watch her all day and never get bored.
I watched the tiny blond woman's hips sway as she walked through the front door into Bobbie's.
