"I didn't want you to worry." He kissed my forehead. "It's not a problem. I won't let him get to you again."
I shook my head. "You have a job. You can't be with me all the time." More tears and sobs came.
"Wynn. Look at me."
He waited until I leaned back and looked him in the face. I took a deep breath and wiped my eyes as I sniffled, steeling myself for bad news.
Onyx's hands came up to grasp my face. He made me look him in the eyes. I could see sincerity and direct honesty in his black gaze. When he was sure he had my attention, he said, "I can take a leave of absence at work. If they won't let me do that, I'll quit. It's that simple. I won't leave you alone. I promise."
I shook my head. "No, you can't do that."
He held my gaze. "I can and I will. You know how heroes in books and movies will sacrifice anything to save the world?"
Confusion crossed my face. "Umm... Yeah?"
The corner of his mouth tipped up. "I'm not a hero; I'm a villain. I will sacrifice the world to save you. Do you understand?"
I sniffled and nodded.
"Good." He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to my lips. When he pulled back, he said, "You won't be unprotected. You have nothing to fear."
Fear still pumped through my veins, but I found myself saying, "Okay."
He ran a hand over my cheek. "What else do you need to get ready? I'm taking you to class."
"You don't have to do that."
Onyx smiled. "Yes, I do. Get ready, little one."
True to his word, Onyx took me to every class. He waited outside the rooms to pick me up, either sitting on a bench or on the floor near the room's door. No one would slip by him.
"Aren't you going to get bored?" I'd asked.
He'd waved his smart phone at me. "We live in a great era. I have games, videos, and books all at myfingertips. I'm good. It's been a long time since I haven't worked. This is like a vacation to me. Don't worry."
That night at my apartment, Onyx cooked dinner, and we worked on self-defense techniques like normal.
As we watched TV later, he said, "I hid guns in your coffee table, kitchen drawer by the fridge, and bathroom for your safety. Don't worry, I'll keep them cleaned and ready to go."
"Onyx. Where did you get those?"
"It doesn't matter. Your safety matters. Eston's not getting in here but if somehow he does, you're protected. I should've done this before."
I thought about arguing, but decided I shouldn't. "Okay, thank you."
He put his arm around his shoulder and pulled me into his side. "Anytime, little one."
Chapter 18
Wynn
"Someone gave your address to Eston. I have to find out who did it." Onyx wrapped an arm around my shoulders and kissed my temple. "This is my best friend, Osian. He's also my brother."
Onyx gestured to another demon who stood inside my door. He looked similar to Onyx with his demon face, no nose, gray skin, dark pupils, and short horns. He had short hair and his hands shoved into leather jacket pockets. Though he nodded acknowledgement, Osian stood there silently, exuding the confidence and nonchalance I'd grown used to from Onyx. Did he have a tail, too? I couldn't see it if he did.
"I have to leave for a while. Maybe a few hours, maybe a few days. I'm not sure. But I trust Osian. He'll keep you safe."
Panic began with Onyx leaving. "You don't know when you'll be back?"
