“Rocco, are you asleep?”

My eyes popped open. “No.”

I shoved my fingers into her golden-brown curls, pulling her close. She slipped under the blanket, lying flush against my chest.

“Maybe the nightmares won’t come tonight.”

I planted a kiss on the top of her head. “If they do, I’ll be here to comfort you.”

Her lips tipped up against my chest.

“I’ll leave a t-shirt. Maybe it will calm you while you sleep.”

She exhaled. “It will.”

“Ryah?”

“Huh?”

“Soon we’ll be together again.”

“Yes, I believe we will.”

For the first time, my woman looked beyond today. And with that sense of peace, I slept like a baby.
