They didn’t waste time steering us away from the wreckage.

“It’s my turn to take care of you, Rocco.” Ryah dabbed an alcohol swab against the wound on my forehead.

I winced at the sting of the alcohol.

“Thanks, Ryah.”

“Is this the only cut?”

“I don’t know.”

“Ryah, check my extremities and I’ll check yours.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

“Rocco, no feeling me up either. Not in front of everyone anyway,” she laughed.

“I see you still have your sense of humor.”

“When you think your life is ending and there’s technically nothing you can do, all you have left is your sense of humor. I mean, come on if it weren’t for Genn, we’d be at the bottom of the ocean.” Her breath hitched, and Ryah’s eyes darted to mine. That face was her silent apology.

My fingers crept up her back. “It’s ok. What matters is Genn is a hero.” I smirked in his direction.

Each person offered their gratitude.

“You all are welcome. Rocco, the second we’re on land I’m taking you to a hospital.” He thrust his index finger in my direction.

Ryah’s eyes bulged. “Is there something else you aren’t telling me?”

“No.”

Not sure she believed me because concern hung on her face like a rainy day. She shooed my hand, then checked my body for external injuries. Her fingers lingered under my jeans and shirt. The girl even checked my ears.

“Ryah, I think it’s safe to say I’m fine.”

“Shut up, Rocco.”

The feisty woman stood on her knees, parting every section of my dark hair.

“Oh, my God, Rocco.”

My heart raced. “What’s wrong?”

Genn rushed over, inspecting the back of my head.

“Ryah, grab a stack of gauze and the peroxide.”

“You’re far from ok, Rocco. You have a deep gash in the back of your head. Something must’ve slammed into your head. All the kitchen items were scattered around the plane. It was probably a sharp item. Doesn’t matter now. Don’t rest on your head. Lie on your side,” he said, as he firmly pressed the gauze against the wound.

The throbbing continued, despite Genn’s temporary mend.

The endless worry was etched on my baby’s beautiful face.

“Ryah, I’ll be fine.”

“Rocco, you should’ve told me sooner something was wrong.”

“What would’ve changed?” I growled.
