Falling beside her again, I brought her hand to my lips. “I love you, Ryah. Please hang on.”

En route to the hospital, it was touch and go. The paramedics worked hard to keep her breathing.

I stayed close after we exited the ambulance and ran through the emergency room doors.

“Sir, you have to wait out here. We need to get her stable,” a nurse said, placing her hands up, halting my movements.

“I want updates on Ryah Conti’s condition,” I ordered.

Her eyes widened, and she visibly swallowed. If they wanted to leave here with their lives, they’d do everything in their power to keep Ryah breathing and eventually alert.

Plunging my ass in a hard plastic chair, I rested my elbows on my knees, gripping my hair.

Ryah, you can’t leave me.

I envisioned her smile from this morning. Her arms circled my neck as she stared up at me. My fingers caressed her smooth, honey-brown skin.

“If we keep lying here, we’ll never make it to class.”

“Look at our initials, Ryah.”

She turned her head upward.

“Our initials are welded together. They signify us.”

Ryah peeked at me. “They do. I love us, Rocco,” she murmured against my lips.

“I can’t wait until tonight.”

“That’s because you love making people pay for betraying us.”

She laughed. “You know me so well.”

Squeezing my eyes shut, I held on to that simple memory of us.

“Mr. Andrisani. Mr. Andrisani.”

I met the doctor's gaze standing in front of me.

Panic struck me as I stared at her blood-stained scrubs.

“What’s going on?” I shot to my feet.

“I’m Doctor Grey. Ms. Conti is stable. We’ve moved her to a private room. Walk with me.”

Her mannerisms were rigid.

“Is she going to be, ok?”

“You aren’t a relative. I’m not supposed to speak to you about her prognosis.”

“I didn’t tell anyone my name, but you knew who I was. And you asked me to walk with you. I think it’s safe to say you plan to tell me what’s going on with my woman.”

“Your family donated an entire wing to this hospital. How could any of the staff not know your name?”

That was my grandfather’s doing. And I’d completely forgotten about it.

“Yeah, you’re welcome. I want to know how Ryah’s doing.” My patience was wearing thin.
