“How about we make it an annual trip, but choose different dates each time?”

“That could work.” Ryah nodded.

“Are you disappointed we didn’t have a job?”

“Nope. I know you’ll make it up to me. There are plenty of thieving assholes who we’ll have a chat with soon enough.”

“I think my favorites are the people who think they can set up shop in any neighborhood and run it like it’s their own. Sometimes I think people believe they can get away with it. They threaten the store owners, who informs us of the low life scum who thought they could rule Philly. We step in, teach them a lesson and run them out of town.”

“Those are my favorites too.” She beamed. “Since the war no one has tried our families.”

“Thank goodness.”

“Rocco, I notice you’re still on edge. You’ve been watching our surroundings more than before.”

Caressing her arm, I sighed. “I’m convinced being extra careful is our new way of life.”

“Was that what you were thinking about at the game when you zoned out?”

“No. Sometimes I wonder if my life was different would I play in the NFL.”

I stared straight ahead because I didn’t want her to pity the rich gangster.

“Look at me, Rocco.” Ryah placed her hand on my cheek, directing my gaze.

“I’ve mentioned to you in the past how I’ve seen you come alive on that field. I’m sorry that isn’t a dream that can be obtained because of the life we live. I think you should play all four years. It might not be the NFL, but you’re out there helping your team win games.”

She smiled, brushing her nose over mine.

“What would you do if you could do something different?”

Her hand swept along my neck as she leaned into the lounger. “I’d still major in business and become a boss. Running a fortune five hundred company.” She flashed a wicked grin.

“Sounds about right.”

“Rocco, I want you to remember I will always be your biggest cheerleader.”

I pulled her into me, kissing her lips. “Thanks, baby. Do you know what the best part of the trip is?”

“No, what’s that?”

I swiped a lock of hair behind her ear. “Having you all to myself.”

Ryah shook her head, laughing. Her eyes fell on mine. “Some of our best times together are when we’re alone, Rocco.” Her nose lingered along my cheek. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
