My eyes fell on Rocco. The scowl owning his face said it all.

“Hey.” I slid into a wooden chair across from him.

“You hugged that guy.”

“He lost his grandmother, Rocco.”

He adjusted the navy beanie on his head. “You still didn’t have to hug him.”

“It was the right thing to do, Rocco. He’s grieving the loss of a loved one.”

“Hey guys,” I heard at my back. I turned, smiling at Faith.

“Hey, girl.”

She sat beside me. “Rocco, who pissed in your meal?”

“Ask Ryah.”

I grabbed half a turkey sandwich off of Rocco’s plate and bit into it. “He’s mad because I offered Levi from English my condolences.”

She peeked between us. “Rocco, that’s normal.”

“She hugged him.”

Faith’s lips twisted. “Rocco, it’s not like that.”

We ate in silence for a moment.

“I invited him to party with us Friday.” Shielding my face from Rocco, I took another bite of my sandwich. Rocco often ordered food for me and him. So, it was normal I ate off of his plate.

Faith lowered my hand. “You might give him the wrong idea.”

Rocco’s eyes burned through me. “See, Ryah.”

“Maybe I was too nice.” I leaned over and kissed his cheek.

“I’ll see you later. I have to study.”

“Yeah, ok.” Rocco huffed.

“Really, bitch you’re leaving?” Faith yelled.

“Sorry, I kind of lost my appetite.”

“Talk to you later.” She gathered her plate and drink and sat at the long table with Shiya, who lived in our dorm.

Sometimes my boyfriend could be too overbearing. I hoped he wouldn’t tell Levi he couldn’t hang with us on Friday.

Whenever Rocco and I had a disagreement, his caveman attitude had something to do with it. I still loved him with my entire heart. I just needed a break sometimes.
